I would think it was so that he could put the strap pin far enough up to let the guitar balance properly - with a normal neck-thru you can sculpt alot of the would away from the neck heel, but you have the top horn to put the strap pin on. With that one the strap has to attach behind the neck.

I think the headstock is hideuos! No thought put into it at all.

Also if you look at the back of the headstock/neck volute area it's really bulky and the neck heel/body joint is bulky as hell for a neck-through.

Brass nuts have atons of friction too so it probaly goes out of tune really badly if you do much string bending.

It just looks really badly designed to me, and I won't even start on that colour,lol.
