Honest opinions on the 7421 - What about this guitar

Hey all,

I've got some questions about the 7421 that I thought you all might be able to answer. *I'm lookin' to get into the world of 7 strings (mostly to match up better with my friend's 5 string bass). *Now, my question is: *How good is the 7421 with respect to quality of build, etc. *(I can always replace pickups)

Are the strings thru-body? *
Is it Japanese or Korean made? *(This is a big one for me....)
How will it compare in craftsmanship to my RG 550?

Why did they kill the 7620...As someone who almost lost an eye to a lo-trs trem (the base plate cracked in half, sending half a tremolo hurtling towards my head) *There's no way I'm goin' back down that road. *

The k7 is well....the k7.

And the UV777 is just "a bit much" *

So that leaves me the 7421. * I'd like honest opinions since all the harmony central reviews seem to be written by "Phat KoRN DUDEZ" *

Ok where to start? The Rg421 is a sweet guitar. Definatly change the pickups first thing. Might i suggest the Blaze's which can do anything, but you might want to check out PAF's if your into that sort of thing. I belive the 421 is made in Korea, but i have played many and it just depends on which one you get. For example I bought my 421 and it came with a 621 neck ... dont ask me but i have proff if you need it. I've felt lots of differances in the necks on these bad boys so choose wisely. The string through is really sweet. (and thats coming from a Lo-pro Edge fanatic) For my money this guitar cant get any better for hard music.
Then I did scallope the fretboard, sand the back of the neck, and strip the paint off of mine.

You can always look for a secondhand RG7621, but I doubt there will be many differences between it and the RG7421. The 7621 has a more upscale bridge, but a fixed-bridge is a fixed bridge, not big of a difference. I have a 7621 and it plays just fine.

I'm about 75% sure that the 742x models are Japanese made. As long as they don't cheapen it beyond the pickups and bridge I think it was a good move by Ibanez to replace the 7621 with the 7421. I'm not sure if the 7421's neck is quartersawn(correct me if I'm wrong) like the 762x models but other than that I think the necks are the same. Good luck.

It is absolutely Japanese. ALL RG7's are.
I don't think they'll ever make an RG7 thats Korean. Maybe they will but I doubt it. Korea has enough work making GRX720's....hehehe...

Anyway. As the others said...I almost see no difference between the 7621 and 7421. Little things here and there...(That M-BOL kicks both their asses tho) but their both excellent guitars.

Yes, they are japanese made. Ibanez has tried to lower the cost by introducing new models with cost saving measures to compete. From the cancellation *of several 2000 models, the RG7 sales must be at a standstill... glen

actually, referring to the original question, that leaves you with the RG7321.

The 7421 is not in the 2001 dealer price list or catalog in the USA. See jemsite - guitar - 7string spec sheet for all details. The price is much lower too... glen

They discontinued the 7421 too!?!?! O c'mon!!! Are we all supposed to choose between pieces of CRAP (like I suspect the 7321 probably is) and extremly high-cost guitars with CRAP inlays (k-7) and not one nice hardtail. this is going downhill fast...

Well...I was planning on trying the 7421XL. I kinda forgot about that. But im basically being forced the bartione. They should have kept the regular 25.5 scale with an added optional 27 inch scale...But hey maybe the longer scale will be work out well who knows

The other guitarist for my band uses an RG7421. *The only differences I saw between the 7621 and the 7421 was cheaper pickups & a more "cost effective" bridge. *However, the cheaper parts have not diminished the quality in my opinion. *Overall, I think the RG7421 is a great bargain for people who don't want a floating bridge. *I say go with it.

What about tuning a baritone normally. *What gauge strings would I have to use. *do you think you could get by with .09's and tune to B??? *

Man, what I would really like is the RG3120 with one extra string...That would be the ultimate. *

* I can see since your new here you must have missed the whole "baritone" discussions.

*The way it works is...These baritones are still supposed to be tuned "standard" BEADGBE. They come with 10's and combining the 10's with the 27 inch scale makes for increased tension and much more clarity. Some people will like it...some wont... Most people getting into these bartiones ARE going to downtune them. And thats fine...Because that is also an advantage to the longer scale. I read on another thread that when he got his new RG1077XL that it was tuned down to A but FELT like it was tuned to B. That to me says A LOT because when I tune my guitars to B, it feels pretty good and isnt to floppy. But when I go down to A, its just to much. Even with heavy gauges its still not clear enough. With the baritone this should be no problem, AND I should be able to use a smaller gauge which is always good so I dont screw up my hand trying to make chords on .070+ bass strings.
