I Need Help On Painting An Rg7620?
HEY GUYS, i am just about to take ownership of my second RG7620VK
(i did this becuse i prefer the lo
pro edge
to the edge and the d'marzio pups, hense why i didn't just by an RG1527)
i was wondering if anyone has stripped this guitar before is the wood gain any good?
and what is the best way to go about painting it can i just spray paint over the top of the original paint?
how do i get a half desent finish?
and if thats to hard what do i need to do if i want MATT (FLAT) BLACK?
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICIATED
CHEERS
MICHAEL

Re: I Need Help On Painting An Rg7620?
If it is basswood, it won't be that nice.
Best bet would be to sand it rough/smooth, and paint over that with good paint. Matte black is available. But, I think you can use Gloss Black and spray a couple layers of matte clearcoat over it as well.
There are a couple of tutorials on the web for this stuff. Go over to projectguitar.com

Re: I Need Help On Painting An Rg7620?
Heres a project I started yesterday, I am doing a Jem RB/rg570 and am not all that concerned about the basswood not being perfect for a stain finish. The wood actually is pretty nice as you can see. I havent finished sanding yet, it still needs to be leveled with a sanding block and a finer grit of paper.
Basically what you need to do first, is to use a finish stripper as I have in the picture. I bought it at Ace Hardware and it works pretty good. Get yourself a brush, either a paintbrush or one like in my picture to apply the stripper on the finish. Brush it on in one direction only, do not paint it on like its paint. Do one side at a time. Top first, back second, and then the edges. It takes about 2 hours for the stripper to kick in, so dont be in a rush. The stripper can says half hour but its BS. Once the stripper loosens the clearcoat, you can scrape it off. I use metal scrapers but plastic is prefered so you dont hack up the wood. Ive been a bench jeweler for 7 years and have a good steady hand, and never hack the wood. If you hack the wood, you have to use wood filler to fill gaps. Once you have stripped the finish, sand it with 220 grit paper and suddenly it cleans up very quickly. After I have all wood showing, I use a sanding block with a finer grit to level and make the surface very smooth. After you have done all sides then you can either apply a primer for painting or you can stain it. This should help you with the basics, good luck.

Re: I Need Help On Painting An Rg7620?
Hey Michael,
I just did something like you are thinking of doing, except mine ended up a sparkly
custom jem
type of thing. I attach some pics for you though showing the steps involved in re-finishing. Please bear in mind that I did all the painting simply with aerosol cans.
Rg750 body stripped. Particularly ugly wood, blechhh- really needs an opaque finish... and
monkey grip
for the jem freaks....
Fill in holes and dents, use some high build primer to seal wood and smooth out again with medium grit.
Keep applying primers and smooth with fine paper until there are no dents or scratches, basically keep repeating until you are happy that the surface is good enough to accept your final colour coats.
I applied a special gold basecoat, then the crackle black top coat
Whacked on many layers of clear, and buffed until I was happy with the surface
Then assemble your almighty rock axe and hope its what you envisioned in the first place!
You'll just have to find the suitable paints to do your matt type finish, it may take some research and experimenting before you find the right one for the job. If you need more help or advice, feel free to ask or PM.

Re: I Need Help On Painting An Rg7620?
Thanks GTR-MAN. You have to use special paints, see my previous message. In my case, I used the Plastikote Crackle paint pack, which is a special basecoat and top coat combination. The basecoat has some special additives in it that make the top coat not stick properly, but let go with the random cracking pattern depending on how thick you spray it. Once the cracks have formed and the top coat dry, it sticks quite ok, then you can seal it with a
clear coat
.
