Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Actually that makes perfect sense....that 52.4872 mm. Instead of my initial thought of 53 mm. So as you add more strings to the guitar, the distances between the strings get smaller.

And with this 30" scale length it actually looks rather slim.

I'm familiar with the band and their music; it was a comment on the pictures.

yeah, figured you were, jim- I meant my comment as a bit of good-natured teasing, and I hope you took it as such.

They DO look pretty simple, though, huh?

Meshuggah simple? BWAH hah hah... that's a riot! Yeah, I suppose harmonically they're not too difficult (chug chug in F! Although Fred's solos are very tasty.) But rhythmically? Whoa... fugettaboutit. Some of the most insane, complex stuff I've heard.

Meshuggah was an eye opener. Or is that ear?

I love Messhuggah, but theres only so much you can handle! I couldnt stomach it for very long I must admit. You cant just sit and listen to them, you have to figure out what they are doing, and what they are trying to achieve. They are alot more musical than people make out - I have just got my uncle into them actually - lol. He hated it at first though!

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

If anything I ever say can be taken two ways, it's safe to assume I was going for the cheap laugh ;-) So, yeah Drew, I knew you were cool, I just wanted to get it out there I was just goofing on the pic and not the band/musicians for the second and third comments.
Personally, I don't get the 8's. I think if I was predisposed to go further than 7 I'd look for a used Chapman Stick, and look to go as far as I could with the concept instead of just adding one more string at a time.
7's really appeal to me as instruments; seeing them makes me want to get them and play them. 8's....look big and cool but that's it for me. An 8 would overwhelm my playing to the point of diminishment. But, they do look cool on someone else!

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

I kinda hear you on the Chapman- I remember drooling over a bass they introduced a year or two back that could be played conventionally or tapped- you might have had to flip a switch or something, I forget exactly, but it was HOT.

The range sorta becomes a non-point as you begin to add strings- the easiest way to play in F# (and by far the cheapest) is simply to detune. However, going from a 6 to a 7 gives you an extra 4th down in any scale position; going from a 6 to an 8 brings that up to like a minor 7th. That's pretty cool, imo.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

The biggest problem with 8-strings is the bass. Having a bass in F# will go out of the human ear range, especially at 34" scale. And writing the basslines in the same octave will be complicated to play, and it will sound wierd when the bass goes over to normal bass one octave under the guitar.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

you got a point there, but maybe you don't need a bass when you're playing that low. maybe they've just got a bass to fill out the sound ? I don't know the first thing about meshuggah sow i'm just guessing. He does look cool with that huge guitar tough :d

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Eh, Mesh made it work well enough on "Nothing..." I'd say a good sub in your PA is probably the biggest hurdle.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Ah, see, I could probably get that guitar done in 3Ds Max and test those values to see how they go or not

The guitar looks nice though. I don't see myself playing an 8 string, but it looks nice

Live, the basslines are played in the same octave.

Same on album too I guess.
