Re: Ibanez 8 string???

I was suprised when I saw them live and the bassist was only playing a 4 stringer - I though 'this is Meshuggah?! Where's the extra strings?!'

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

back when i saw them several months ago with tool (when they still had the nevborns), their bassist was using a 5 or 6 string, can't remember which but i know it wasn't a 4 string...

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

It's the new bassist. Here's a pic...ooo btw sorry it was 4 string for the 7 string stuff and it may wellbe (as you can see from the pic) 5 string stuff for the 8 string songs.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Have they started playing basslines one octave lower for the low F? I don`t think so. That doesn`t look like a .150 string either.

Almost an extra octave in any position sounds niiiiice to me. Even better if you can somehow string up a high A instead of a low F#, although with a 30" scale I doubt it.

Yeah, I keep wanting one of these - I've had one of those Meshuggah pics on the desktop since I saw them on extendedrangeguitar.com

Yea man me too! Got those two pics on my desktop, I love em. Once I save up some money, I'll probably end up contacting EKG to build me one! :-)

No they haven't. The bassist plays in unison with the guitars (i.e. ultra low F note on guitar w/ standard F note on a 4-string bass).

For the 8-string guitar music, the bassist plays a standard 4-string bass tuned to F (up a 1/2 step from normal tuning). He plays the identical notes as the guitars.

For the 7-string guitar music, the bassist plays a 5-string bass tuned down a 1/2 step (Bb Eb Ab Db Gb). Like a regular bass, he's a octave lower than the guitars.

Yeah, that would be sweet. Except that Ibanez would only make 60 and sell them for $5,000.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

It wouldnt be an 8 string floyd though would it, it would be an 8 string fixed. They would only have to manufacture the 8 string floyd shape for the FX fixed bridge. It wouldnt need to move or anything. At the end of the day, an 8 string is always gonna be better with a fixed bridge. It allows downtuning more easily and the likes.

For me, an 8 string with a trem (especially a floyd) would be utterly pointless. I cant see them ever creating a 8 string floyd myself......I can only see them keeping it fixed bridge! I cant see Ibanez ever releasing them either. And if they did, like you said, the price would just be rediculous.

i cant imagine what one of these would sound like de-tuned, it'd cause earthquakes!! lol

the trem would be an absoloute bastard to tune if it were a floating trem so i dont see that as realistic either, but we can still dream about a lovely 8 string ibanez of our own.... you could widdle away days on that neck

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

A company will no doubt manufacture 8 strings I say. I just cant see it being Ibanez first, not with the stuff theyre making at the minute. It is nice to dream yeah, and you never know - I suppose it may happen. There have been sillier things made!
