the trem would be an absoloute bastard to tune if it were a floating trem so i dont see that as realistic either, but we can still dream about a lovely 8 string ibanez of our own.... you could widdle away days on that neck
Isnt Hipshot making 8 string floating bridges now?

For the 8-string guitar music, the bassist plays a standard 4-string bass tuned to F (up a 1/2 step from normal tuning). He plays the identical notes as the guitars.

For the 7-string guitar music, the bassist plays a 5-string bass tuned down a 1/2 step (Bb Eb Ab Db Gb). Like a regular bass, he's a octave lower than the guitars.

I imagine the EQ settings are tweaked dramatically to fill out the sound on the Bass settings when played in unison, Probably more bass and midrange on the bass.

That said when I listen to meshuggah I'll be damned if I can hear between them.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

little info on meshuggah, not simplistic at all, very polyrhythmic, Fredriks solos are VERY Allan Holdsworth inspired(espescially Future Breed Machine, Sublevels, Elastic and most solos before Destroy Erase Improve)

their riffs arent like Lamb of God complex but they get the point across

Tomas Haake is by far one of the best drummers in the world(Niel Peart being THE best with no arguement from anyone)

also to let u know, the bassist doesnt play lower, only song that they have a bassist play octave lower F is in Spasm off of Nothing(heaviest song in the world) other than that he plays the same thing i guess as the guitars unless they are playing older stuff when they would use their 7 string guitars, bass parts in Meshuggah are NOT complex at all, they mainly put focus on guitar and drums

if i said anything already said im sorry, i joined mainly to post in here because i am a HUGE fan of Meshuggah

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

I've never even heard of that band before I found this thread. I'll have to check them out because the only 8 string i've ever heard before is the one that Rusty Cooley uses. Gotta say that Ibanez' 8 string looks a LOT less ugly than the one he uses but I can't see myself ever wanting anything like that. I kind of like having the division between guitar and bass.

I'll argue with that. Neil Peart is great, but I know of many other drummers with a much more complex, varied, and ever-evolving technique and sound.

Search out a guy on here named GivenToFly. He bought my EKG 8-string I had built. It's basically an RG-style 8-string. Anyway, he had it up for sale at one point, but I haven't seen him on here lately.

Polymetric.

This is true.

Neil Peart is overrated and you are overrating Haake. Normally I wouldn't argue (because it's pointless) but you said that no one would argue so...

Good job Tsorovan, that'll teach him to not wrongly define Meshuggah in the future, BOY did you show him a lesson.

Miss you btw, get to meshforum <3

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

No. Just because they've used 5:4 and 4:5 a few (not so many) times does not make them "a polyrhythmic band". I do not consider 3:2 (& 2:3) and 4:3 (& 3:4) to be polyrhythms, just as I don't consider 3/2 & 3/4 odd time signatures. It's too terse and commonly used in western music to get special treatment. If we did, we'd have to start calling lots of pop on the radio "polyrhythmic" too. ~95% of their material is polymetric, and only so by the grace of Haake's straight and steady cymbal/hi-hat ostinato.

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

I'm no expert on Meshuggah or rythms like that, but I thought "I" was very impressive. I don't know if it's that tricky but that "thing" Thomas Haake does 5-6 minutes in the song is pretty impressive. At least it is in my ears.
