Re: Ibanez 8 string???

It's a 3:2?! wow.. didn't even think of that... even though it's "just" 3:2 I still think it's impressive. Well, guess I made a fool of my self.. won't be talking about these things in the forum again, people in this forum knows too much!!

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Don mind Tsorovan, he likes to disagree with people :-) . Did you quit the Meshuggah forum Tsorovan? Haven't seen you over there in ages.

Just to ad, I don really know too much about polyrythmic or polymertric, I just play riffs I think sound good :-D
Meshuggahs riffing can be quite complex at times...at least I think so...theres alot of weird riffing on C33

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

3:2 isn't a polyrythm. It's 1/4th note triplets over 1/4th notes.

It's in 9 cases out of 10 better to treat them as such, yes, as I do.

Aye, Meshforum is overrun by noobs, it's really stressing.
Good to see yah again though Tsorovan, I love that trademark cynicism.

Haake's a good drummer, but he's no Mike Portnoy. (IMO, no arguing, please don't beat me)

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

Well, his statement is actually true. Let's break it down:
1) Haake is a good drummer.
2) He's no Mike Portnoy.

Both these are highly correct. Of course, the underlying, implied meaning is far from correct, but that's his problem (:

American slang, I guess. the word "but" being the qualifier for what the meaning of the sentence is. BUt you knew that

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

That is nice. I'd have fun playing that!
I had a friend that bought his first 7-string back in '98 a few months after I did.
We compared our guitars and I noticed that my low B string was his E string!
He had it tuned to low F (F,B,E,A,D,G,B) so he was missing the high E that I had.
So I thought at the time if he had a high E it would be an 8-string set-up.
I knew back then I was capable enough to tackle one. Now, I still would!

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

The idea of having an 8 string Ibanez guitar sounds fantastic...and in the first time I was impressed...but after a few days I came up with my final position on this problem and so my fellow 7 string fans....do we REALY need more low...I think that we don't...I think that the low B(or A) is enough to express any kind of deep feeling...and there is another problem with the additional 8th string...that's the amp problem.....I have a problem with the sound with my 7 string guitar that forced me to order myself a specialy desined custom tube amp just to be abel to extract the right tone from my instrument.....but with 8 string guitar I think that the player will have to use a bass amp or something like that...

Re: Ibanez 8 string???

I'm not against 8-strings, I think they could be great. At least for cleans (but with a lower tuned string, the scale length needs to be >30", I'd say), and personally, I'd look into the possibilities of having it tuned in 3rds (with a low B or A) for some really creative chords. Who knows though, it might suck, but I'd sure like to try.

I think Meshuggah are definitely misusing their 8-strings. I think they sound like crap, especially how the music lacks heaviness due to the bass playing (roughly) a fourth higher than usual, and of course due to their recent laziness using direct recording Line6 gear instead of a proper, miced-up Holdsworth-inspired rig*. That goes for cleans, lead and rhythm tone alike. The tone(s) on Nothing and forward stink, if you ask me. A low F or E would work great for accents (and it'd make it quite dramatic, I'd say) or cleans, but not for constant single-string riffing.

No likey.

*: AFAIK, Thordendal still has his old terrific rig, he surely has the know-how to set it up, and they share their own studio with another band; pure laziness I say.
