Ibanez website - Custom 7420? Extremely custom

I was just on the UK site checking out colors that we don't get here in the US.

I happen to see that Rob Balducci is on the roster there. When you click on his name, it says that he uses a "Custom RG7420".

Really custom apparently, because the 7 string Rob lists on his site has a mahagony body, maple top, Edge trem, Blaze pickups, etc.

I guess my point is that I find Ibanez calling Rob's 7 a bit questionable. It seems to be more of a misleading marketing ploy to get more low-line 7420's sold.

Let me say that I know this isn't Rob's doing.

And the RG7420 is a decent guitar.

I just think Ibanez should just be a little bit more truthful and call it an "Ibanez Custom RG7" or something.

yeah, i caught that too. same goes with the guy from linking park, and one or two other 7-stringers who i can't quite remember at the moment. um, one was dave weiner, actually. oops, lol.

I suppose it's about the ebst they can do- short of the universe, there are only two floating bridge 7's ibanez markets in the states (the catalogue i saw this in) that i can think of- the 7420, and the XL-something or other one. You clearly can't call it an XL- it has a normal scale length. It can't be a universe for two reasons- the vai connection, and as i recall it doesn't have a middle humbucker. And the 7620, the guitar it's closest to, has been discontinued in the states. what's that leave ibanez with? a 7420. i agree, a little unethical. but i suppose they have their reasons...

OTOH, if you look there, it says Fredrik Thordendal uses a custom RG7620, and Mårten Hagström (both from Meshuggah) a custom RG7420. So, there's definitely something more going on there..
