Anything with a rigid molecular structure will resonate well whereas wood will absorb the vibrations. I can imagine this being a feedback monster.

NAMM 1998 - 2003. I am quite sure somebody presented a stone guitar at one point. No names or anything, but I think they only made part of the body from stone. Good luck! Would be nice to see the result!

Re: Insane guitar

How about stone with hollow chambers inside? You'd have to make the guitar body in two halves then stick them together, but maybe that'd work? Interesting project, I'd love to see how it will turn out if you can do it.

And what do you stick stone together with? Bolts?

Re: Insane guitar

I read this in a guitar magazine awhile back. Henry Garza (the guitarist from Los Lonly Boys) was having a statocaster built for him with a stone body. The body was still made out of wood, but laminated in stone. I remember him saying that it improved the tone. I'm guessing that it would sound really "mid-rangey." But I've never played one so I wouldn't know.

Re: Insane guitar

I made the first cuts today. Just a wide cut to prepare the fitting of the reinforcement. So here we go.

As an answer to the short discussion about joining two stones together: First you drill holes in the stones, then you put something in the holes, like bolts. Then you will use a special stoneglue. That will make the joint as stable as anything!

I looked the NAMM thing up. NAMM 2005. It happens that a company puts a thin stonelaminate on the front of their guitars.

Re: Insane guitar

Aside from the fact that its going to weight too much, you ll find out that it will (most likely) sound VERY bright and thin. It will probably have huge sustain though. IMHO a very thin 2mm top (over mahogany or a softer wood, not too dense wood) will be enough to affect the sound and the guitar will still be playable, as a matter of fact, it may turn out to have a pretty good tone.

That's not very exciting, though.

Re: Insane guitar

I would suggest to just put a thin layer of stone on a wood body, with the pickups mounted directly on the wood. I honestly think that completely stone guitar would sound horrible.

Re: Insane guitar

dude, donīt tell the guy to only make a thin layer of stone on it, i wanna see see what itīll be like when itīs all stone! :P donīt discourage him! :P

anyways, i was thinking it would be cool to fill the hollow parts of the guitar with wood, like basswood and mahogany... just cut them to fit the hollow parts perfectly, so it sits tight when you shove it in, then you add glue, and then you glue the other half of the stone on... so instead of hollow cavities, you have wood cavities... and make shure the pieces of wood make very tight contact with all of the inside cavity walls...

also, for simplicity, you could just make the cavities square, so the fitting of the wood wonīt be so difficult :P

OR you could make a long hollow cavity under the length where the pickups should be, so that the pickup-cavities are in the wood... so the pickups are mounted onto the wood...

what do yaīll think? :P
