Re: Insane guitar

MF_Kitten; since you requested a progressreport. Here you go:

I broke failed with my first fretboard. A routingmistake ended that cursed piece of wood. I am working on a new one. So I have to do the work I hate once more. Well ain't life a wet sock in the face?

Anyway, I will recieve the bridge tomorrow ( monday 070820 ) and I fitted the electronics yesterday. And for the picture I put on the broken fretboard. So here we go:

Here is the artgallery I cooperate with. We had a gig there yesterday.

Re: Insane guitar

SOOOON.... I don't know if I'm underestimating the time for putting the frets in place, but I have taken a day of tomorrow, asked my wife to stay with a friend and equipped myself with a load of patience and food. I think all my work on the guitar, except for small things, will be finished on sunday!

Re: Insane guitar

pics, pics.... pics... Latest update. My first fretjob ever. Not perfect, but hopefully good enough. I guess I'm quite stupid to belive I can make a fanned fret guitar as my first guitar ever.... Well, we will see if it works... eventually...

I am still on schedules.

Re: Insane guitar

I have ordered strings.

084, 072, 056, 044, 030, 018, 014, 011, preliminary tuning:
Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db. So the lowest E is tuned 13 halfsteps down from a regular tuning! But since I've got 27 frets, I can still reach the high E. If my fingers can reach it that is... So we have here 5 octaves of insane guitar.

I'll gladly have your comments on this.

The time for soldering the electronics is booked to next tuesday. It will probably be played for the first time then. If I have an opportunity I will record it for you guys.

Re: Insane guitar

Are you seriously going to play using those strings? That's some insane tension you're going to get right there! But hey - whatever floats your boat! You play with gauges that heavy normally as well?

The only thing that I am not a fan of are the non-slanted pickups. But I have no idea of the sonic characteristics of a stone guitar. I'd like to see some videos and hear some clips of it when you're done! Bra jobbat!

Re: Insane guitar

I am not really sure about any problems with the tension. The 5 extra inches neck equals 3,5 extra frets. And the thickness of the strings takes care of the rest. i have ordered the same strings as used in fenders bassguitar. It is tuned an octave down and has a 30" mensur. So I think the tuning will work, but I am not sure if it is really practical. Will you be able to play chords easily? Will the scales be hard to work out? That is what I need your opinion on. i am really grateful for your advice. Don't forget that I am NOT a guitarplayer. I am a drummer.

Thank you!

Oh... I just got notified that me and my stonefriend probably will be morningguest at a radiostation here in Stockholm!

Re: Insane guitar

Dude, I'm not saying that the tension will be too light - I'm saying it will be way too tight! Scales and chords won't be hard at all to figure out if you know the basics about theory. I'm just wondering how bar-chords would work out on a fanned fretboard, but you'll be able to say that to me in a couple of days!(?)
Mad stuff that you as a drummer would build an insane guitar like this! Keep up the good work.

Re: Insane guitar

Too tight? Muahahaha. That is nice. Then I can use thinner strings or tune it down further... Muahahaha! But as you said: The one who is alive will see.

Tha bar-chords will work out nicely. It seems the fingers lies more naturally on the fanned fretboard than on a regular one. God damn... I am still waiting for the strings to arrive! Cursed be the postal service!

Now to the most interesting thing. Trying to intonate and tune the monster. The electronics will be soldered on tuesday. Hope you like this picture.
