Insane guitar
I would like to have your opinion on this:
I am just about to start my own crazy guitarproject. It will be an eight-stringed, 30"-scale/ 28"-scale fanned-fret design, with thru-neck, made of black granite with a Diane reale-marble front. It will have two Lundgren pick-ups.
Would anyone be interested in owning one or try playing on one of those. I am making as much as of curiosity as of a possible way of making money. I don't think anyone in the whole world has ever done anything like this.
I am a mastercraftsman in stone so I know how to do it, but I need opinions. And if anyone has heard of a stoneguitar before I would be most greatful to hear what that person has to say.

Re: Insane guitar
Sounds like a fascinating project. Not sure about the tonal properties of stone, but I'm sure some weight-relieving will be going on. Please keep us updated.
Shall we put a moratorium on the "that will ROCK" pun now or later?

Re: Insane guitar
It will weigh about 20 kg or 44 ibs, so I guess I just have to play HEAVY music... ha ha ha. (You can come up with all sorts of jokes about this.)
But I really wouldn't care if it weighed in att a 100 ibs. I am to curious of the sound, that I just have to make it now that I finally have got the chance.
Anyway, it will have a steelreinforcement inside the neck. Johan Lundgren just told me that it wouldn't interfer with the pick-ups I will order from him. What is your knowledge about this matter? Do I have a problem with the steel close to the pick-ups?

Re: Insane guitar
You should make it an S style body, very thin to take some of the weight out.

It will look something like this. And some parts of the body will be hollow, and some parts carved like some conklins I have seen on their site.

Re: Insane guitar
I'm really curious how this can work out! Sounds like a good idea (I've heard of mirror fretboards, so I suppose that stone will have similar attributes), but for the weight issue. I hope this works out fine! Good luck! Keep posting on the progress!

Re: Insane guitar
Sounds like an engineering nightmare! I'd love to see it if you can pull it off. It will certainly be incredibly unique! Good luck!

Re: Insane guitar
This morning, I started reading Melvin Hisc-o-c-k's (damn this swear filter) "Build Your Own
Electric Guitar
," and in one of the early chapters, the author mentions how during the 70's, a granite guitar was submitted to Fender's R&D department. They found the sustain to be incredible, that the body did not absorb (and therefore dampen) the vibration of the strings at all. Problem was, a special stand had to be assembled to hold the guitar so someone can play it. Food for thought.
You may have to consider a stand for the guitar, too. Yeah, sure, your girlfriend sits on your lap and it's not uncomfortable even though she probably weighs at least twice as much as the guitar, but the weight is distributed differently- consider snow shoes as well and how they work. Now imagine the weight confined to something as thick as, say, a
strat body
. Different story altogether. The focus of 44lbs on your thigh while playing the guitar sitting down could be very uncomfortable. Perhaps consider a lightweight body such as alder or basswood with a thin stone top.

Re: Insane guitar
Thank you for this positive information! :-) I hope my beyond deathmetal-riffs will sound as hard as it will hurt if I drop the guitar on my toes.
I am basically a drummer, so I will most surely never be forced onstage with this... thing. And being a drummer means that I have a couple of unused tripods in my appartment. One of them is going to transform itself into a guitarsupport.

Re: Insane guitar
Stone.... Really? The whole thing? Perhaps you should consider just having the top have a layer of stone? Also I think stone would sound really crappy. It's molecules are way too rigid. Wood is flexible and resonates that's why it's the industry standard. If you want to try this go ahead. You're going to be disappointed though.
