Question

Is The RG2077XL A Good Guitar ??????

I'm thinking of getting an RG2077XL but after doing a search on this forum there seems to be a lot of posts from people saying that they're having problems keeping theirs in tune.

Does anyone own/play one of these guitars and if so what's it like? Can it be set up to play well and what gauge strings are best on a 7-string XL scale guitar ? Is it a 'limited' guitar as far as the styles of music it's suitable for ?

I was also wondering if the longer scale-length can be hard to cope with or isn't it that noticable? I've noticed with some 7-strings that the B string can be a bit 'rattly' and lacking in tension. Does the longer scale-length sort that out?

I'd be very grateful for any opinions or advice about these guitars.

Thanks.

is it a good guitar? imo, yes

sure, it can be set up to play nicely

what I've found with mine is that with a longer scale you require a thicker gauge to get the same tension you would have had with a thinner gauge on a shorter scale guitar.

it's not going to limit you to only playing certain styles

if you have short fingers or a bad finger spread then you'll find it a bit tough going on the slightly longer scale, otherwise it's not a problem

those other 7 stringers obviously were not setup properly if the low B was "rattly"

That's backwards, the longer the scale length, the higher the string tension on the same guage to get to the same pitch.

yeah, that's what I went with before I got the RG2077xl but now I'm using a .068 for the low B where I would've used a .060 on a 25.5" scale

that could just be my fingers getting stronger though I guess =/

How the hell do you fit anything above a .60 through the gotoh tuner? Did u drill it? I use a .60, tuned to drop A, and i think its perfect.

I used to use a set of GHS Zakk Wyldes with a .70 for a low B on my universe. Mind you that's 10-60 with a 70 for a B, but I don't recall having problems getting the .70 through the gotoh tuner.... errrr wait.... I *might* have used the left over part of my A string(.52) as a file to widen up the hole, but I seriously don't remember doing that.

(I *KNOW* I had to do that for a Jackson that had Sperzels but not on my Universe)

Is the neck the same width as a Universe or is it slightly narrower like the RG2027's?

What about neck thickness? It's a 'wizard 7' flat slim neck isn't it.

I believe the neck width, as in the width of the fretboard, is identical. if you mean neck fitness, a quick look at the japanese ibanez site could give you an answer.

I've gone as high as a .68 on my 7620 with no issues.

I have an RG1077XL and I freaking love it. The XL scale takes some getting used to, but once you do its all you'll want to play.
