Just tried the RG 7321... and I HATED it

At the studio I found an old friend of mine, and he was using an RG 7321. Of course, I asked him to try the guitar.

I own a JEM 555 BK, and I never played a 7 string before. Maybe I'm just too used with the JEM neck. Well, the 7321 neck felt like a baseball bat in my left hand. It was too thick. But the fretboard was not too large, in fact, the strings seemed to be too close to each other.

Not bad to play really, but I didn't like it. At all.

Now the question for you experienced guys: is the 7321 neck close to other models, like the Universe, 1527 or 7420?

If so, definitely I'm a 6 string guy.

The 7321 is the cheapest 7 Ibanez makes/has ever made, but it's a decent player.

It's not the cheapest, there was a GIO 7 string model with a strat style bridge.

Re: Just tried the RG 7321... and I HATED it

I have 3 seven strings and they each have different neck profiles.

My RG7620 has a thick neck (for an Ibanez) which is similar to that of the RG7321, but feels different because of the lack of binding, and is a little easier to play.

My RG7420 (with an RG7620-stamped neck, which I understand is very common) has a very thin neck, comparable to a Jem. It's the easiest to play but I'd prefer a rounder fretboard radius.

My UV777BK's neck is midway between the other two but feels very different because the back of the neck is bare wood, while the 7620 has a light gloss and the 7420 is satin. The binding makes it feel a little different as well.

Cool

Re: Just tried the RG 7321... and I HATED it

7321 neck is pretty much the same thickness as 1527, but the ugly feel comes from the neck profile shape. 1527 has very comfortable round neck profile (somewhat C shape), whereas 7321 has very squarish kind of unfinished neck profile (something like U or D profile).

You just can not compare Korean or Indonesian and Japan Prestige guitars, MIJ are so much more better: better wood, better finish and better construction.

EDIT: my statement is a bit harsh: not all Korean Ibanezes are that bad - S7320 and XPT707FX are wonderful guitars. There is a tendency they're improving the quality there and I believe even Prestige line will be moved to Korea in near future.

It is now, since 2007 I think, mine (a 2004) is korean. Not a bad guitar, but its no MIJ guitar either. A good 7-string on a budjet.

It's not logical to dismiss 7 string guitars based on playing one model!!! If you really want to be a 7 stringer try as many as possible with an open mind. I'm an Ibanez man through and through but tried a Petrucci 7 string at the London Guitar Show last year and it really felt comfortable to me!!

Pity i can't afford one

Was Korean some time a go. But that changes nothing. 7321 is still very dodgy guitar compared to 1527 or 7320.

I have a 2004 MIK RG7321, I chose it over a 99 RG7620 cause the neck on the RG7321 was just perfect, I don't know why yours felt like a baseball bat, but mine is very thin.

Re: Just tried the RG 7321... and I HATED it

It really depends on the year, too. I won't pretend to be an expert on 7321 neck profiles or anything, but there's been a LOT of variability in Ibanez necks over the years.

The last few years, '06 and onward, say, Ibanez seems to be putting more or less the same neck profile on everything, a slightly tubbier-than-of-old D-shaped profile that reallly reminds me of the old 2027/CST necks, which I loved. Before that, the UV neck was a little more C-shaped for at least the '99-onward period, before that the super skinny old-style UV neck which is thinner than I generally like but comefortable nonetheless.

I don't believe I've ever played a '04 7321, but I remember an '06 I played at a GC that had a great neck, nice enough in shape (obviously the fretwork wasn't jawdropping, but was at least solid) that I almost bought the thing for a project guitar, and probably would have had I not been meeting a guy there to pick up a C7 Blackjack. It was nice and substantial without feeling bulky, with a sort of D-like profile reminisenct of my '07 1527 and the 2027's and CST's I used to own.

I have an 04, the neck on mine is smooooth! Way smoother than my 2550 or my 550. But it still just a 7321 and no way does it play, sound, or feel better than my MIJ 550 and 2550.

I don't think it's not because of the guitar, simple you're just not a 7 string player just like me

Somehow, right? Mine has one of the most comfortable necks I've ever played on an Ibanez. I couldn't believe how good it felt.
