Re: KORN setup? KORN sound? still trying

Wow! Here's a thread that keeps coming back. Looking back at my old comment I think I'd add that it might help to be extremely loud!!!

I think I can say I have that Korn Sound. I hope to make a link with my bandīs last recording.
We are in the Korn way...so you would judge.

Of course, recording with double tracking in each channel and double micīd.

Making another cab with Eminence speakers.

Letīs see.

Hello!

What's the tone/sound difference with the two pick up types in the two same RG7620?

Blaze Custom vs Blaze?

Thank you.

Re: KORN setup? KORN sound? still trying

As old as this thread is, I may have some insight. I had the pleasure of hanging out with Korn on their bus back in late 94? It was cold I remember that much. Anyways I asked them how they got their sound on that disc, in particular I asked about the beginning of "Clown" where Head plays his riff without the band. He said that the engineer on the album modded stomp boxes. He said they used Marshall heads and modded stomp boxes. I wasn't sure if this was true, but I later read an article that said they had recorded all of the guitar parts, and that Ross Robinson called them in to hear a new tone he had dialed in which ultimately ended up in the recording. It was a modded Big Muff, which they dubbed "Bigger Muff", and it was in fact modded by Richard Kaplan who was the engineer on the first Korn and Peachy.

My memory is foggy on this but that's how I remember it

Re: KORN setup? KORN sound? still trying

hahah -this thread still lives. I remember when he first bought this guitar. interesting reading this thread - as i didn't have internet at the time.

i bought the 7620 off "joshka" a few years ago. he gave up trying to sound like korn and put the guitar in a closet. A fret polish /fretboard oil later it was basically a new guitar.

i've still got it.

Lets just say it was all user error. all of his problems weren't really problems....

How it looks today:

This is close to true. The "Bigger Muff" wasn't a modded Big Muff, but a custom built pedal that Kaplan created. From what I recall, it was a tubed-based, fuzz circuit mounted onto a piece of wood. The tubes were exposed and it fed back when not been played through. I think Korn uses this feedback as a 'note' during one of their songs. The pedal was just meant to be used in the studio.

It became the hallmark sound of nearly all Ross Robinson-produced albums during that era.

Like the OP, I had an infatuation with Korn's sound. I started playing guitar a few months before I heard their music. As a young player, they became the band that I tried to emulate...until I outgrew them. No offense, but I think we're all like that. Anywho, after reading an article in one of the guitar rags about the Indigo Ranch and Kaplan, I called him up and spoke to him. I asked him if he could make a Bigger Muff for me and he said that he would, but the price was something that I couldn't afford at the time. I don't recall exactly, but I believe he wanted $1000 for it.

i know this is a very old thread but i have a question and it comes very close to talking about it here.
i looked thru the rules and did not see it was against the rules to thread bump old thread and if it is i am very sorry.
ok so here we go.
the legendary BIGGER MUFF at Indigo Ranch... how does this new pedal from EHX called English Muff'n stack up to this pedal? does anyone have any idea if this would emulate the sound of the modded pedal from the Ranch? both are "tube driven Muff" from what i understand but id love some input from others on this.

I could not answer that for you as I haven't played through either pedal. I've only just now heard of the English Muff'n.

Looking at EHX's website, it looks like you may switch out the stock tubes (12AY7) for the higher gain 12AX7s.

Have you tried one of their regular Big Muff pedals? They sound very close to Korn's first two albums.

Good luck with your tone search.

Boogies are a huge part of their sound there's no doubt about that. I've played on Peavey's, Hughes, Oranges, Marshalls they are great amps in their own rite but they just dont have that "korn" sound Korn had in their first two albums.

I feel the Amp makes a bigger difference then buying a ton of pedals

Oh really?!
What was your first clue?
Lol
There's no Korn sound, there's mesa boogie sound.
Mesas have a very specific tone, you can't get it with any other ampli or gizmos.
Everybody who played through a mesa know it.
It's unique.
