I'm mighty happy I'm not a Meshuggah guitar tech. Imagine tuning up one of those, with a floater, with a fresh set of strings?

Just in case someone was wondering, you don't play all 10 of the strings on that classical guitar. The lower four are drone strings. I suppose you could play them if you wanted.

Woo! My first post, so hi all!

Anyway, I saw Meshuggah live last Sunday, and they were indeed playing 8-string Ibanez's. Wow, they are massive sounding live! A friend of mine took some pics and there's a great one of Marten playing the beast - I haven't got anywhere to put them up online, so I'd happily mail them to anyone that wants them/doesn't mind putting them up!

Ever heard Paul Gilbraith? he plays 8 string classical.

Just out of curiosity, what do you tune an 8 string to? and does meshugga use it to its full potential or just groove on the bottom 2 strings?

I guess a normal 8-string (with another low string) is tuned F#BEADGBE, Meshuggah tune down 1/2 a step so they are F Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb and to answer your other question, they do a lot of grooving (e.g Rational Gaze) , but Frederik plays some tasty Holdsworth esque solos (ummm..like Glints Collide for example). That probably means they use the top 2 and the bottom 2 l (ah they use the other 4 strings in the clean parts of course! Check out the last song on 'Nothing' - Obsidian) Hope that answers your question.

Galbraith's tuning is A-E-A-D-G-B-E-A and his low A can be tuned up as high as C.
