More pickup questions.

Greetings,

I am trying to educate myself on the in and outs of pickups. In my rg7620, I am thinking of replacing the stock pickups. From what I can tell the guitar is made of Basswood. I read somewhere that the type of wood can determine what kind of pickup should be installed. Does that matter? Also if a pickup can be installed in the bridge and neck, does that mean they will sound the same in either position?

Re: More pickup questions.

yes, certain pickups sound better in certain woods.

you'll need to specify which position you'll install the pickup in, as even a model with the same name will have different specs varying from position to position.

As far as what to put in there, different pickups suit different needs to the specific player.

Re: More pickup questions.

1) Yes and no. There is no better just personal preference.
2) No they will not sound the same in either position because the location of the pick up has a big affect on the sound, but there is no rule that says a neck pick up has to go in the neck position or a bridge has to go in the bridge.

Re: More pickup questions.

Thanks for your replies. I am looking at the Dimarzio Blaze and PAF 7. In all my years of playing (poorly) I only use the bridge pickup so I am clueless in which one (s) I should get, (the PAF 7 can go in either slot)and where I should install it. I already have a 95? UV7BK so I would like something a little different. I am a huge fan of Fear Factory's clean heavy sound. Enough of my ranting. Thanks for your help.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but does anyone know what 7-string pups sound good in red oak?

I really like the PAF 7's. A little lower output, but crystal clear, tight, and very responsive.

I have the Evo7 and the PAF7 installed in my basswood UV if you want to hear what they sound like thru my rig.

Re: More pickup questions.

You should really try out a Seymour Duncan JB-7 rather than a PAF-7. Same idea, more or less, except one of them is for ladies (DiMarzio). Do you wanna be a lady? Of course not

The JB7 is a high output pickup, and the PAF is not. The PAF7 would be a great choice in the neck position, and the JB would not. They are not the same by any stretch, really, and not really comparable. The Jazz 7 is a much closer match to the PAF 7 than the JB7 is. The JB7 is a great pickup, but it couldn't be further from the "same idea, more or less".

Re: More pickup questions.

Also, and I don't mean to send people elsewhere....but "sevenstring.org" has very good pickup reviews pertaining to the 7620. Some of these guys have reinstalled several different pickups on the same guitar and reviewed each one as they were switching them. Most with basswood bodies agree on an Air Norton 7 for the neck p/u, but for the bridge...it runs the whole line of seven string p/u's.

Re: More pickup questions.

I was more or less just plugging the JB-7 in a joking fashion. Of course he doesn't want one for the neck position, and of course it's far higher in output... that was the root of the joke.

However, I do think he should probably check out the Air Norton 7. Great pickup!
