Otherwise it looks amazing.
Congrats

The 5-string bass housing (EMG35DC) is what they use for EMG707. Yeah, the EMG45DCs are pretty massive, but it's better to be safe than sorry. And Andy is correct about what he said.

Well, I did a ton of research when purchasing the parts. This project has been budget-minded from the beginning. I've taken almost a year to get this project up-and-running & I wanted to do it as cost effective as possible. Hell, I'm not sure if I'll like playing an 8-string. So, why invest a ton of money into something I may not like? Normally, a custom 8 averages around $3K. This project is roughly a 1/3 of that cost.

Is there anyone making non-active 8 string pickups?

I'd like to build one I think, I just really don't care for the sound of active electronics.

Yes, Lundgren Pickups in Sweden. Meshuggah uses them in their 8-strings. I used EMGs because I like the sound, plus I have an endorsement with them (cheap for me!).

Here's Lundgren's site...

Sweet! That's affordable! Can't wait to see the finished product!

Dude,Thats looking great,Huge respect to Eddie for doing such a great job so far,I'm sure you'll re-coup any cash put into this if you don't get on with the extra string (iirc your more than used to 7) it's a shame mine has hit the back burner with trem problems and such

I can't wait to see the finish beast

That's just so cool. A budget-priced 8-string! (Well, considering the alternatives, $1000 is definitely a bargain.)

Who'd-a-thunk it?

That is a great looking guitar, and I can't wait to see/hear the finished product.

On another note, all this 8 string excitement recently has gotten me really itching for one, which leads me to a very important question. Is there ANY way to build one with a Floyd-style trem on the top 6 strings and the lowest two fixed without having to have a totally custom bridge designed and built? I want an 8, but I don't get along too well with fixed bridges.

Not really possible i dont think. The baseplate of a floyd sticks out too far, and would interupt where the next string(s) would fit.
-better shred than dead-ANDY

What if you could have the bridge for the low two strings behind the baseplate (away from the neck, towards the botton strap button), then you could have a hybrid scale instrument at the same time...

No wait, that would really mess with the intonation on the low strings if the frets remain unchanged...or would it?

Sorry, just thinking out loud...

Conklin has made a few hardtail/trem hybrid bridges, but they are incredibly expensive. The trem is more like a Wilkinson, not FR style. I talked to Hipshot about making an 8-string tremolo (again, not FR). It would run at least $350US for one. I, too, love tremolos, but that's out of my price range.

Or my original idea of 2 edge's ;-) 4+4 just need to get a competant welder/joiner thats used to working relatively soft metals

It's an option and one i am still trying to fathom if it's realistic before i start building
