My RG2127x Oiled Mahogany

Well.. it's been a while since I posted about the RG2127x that I purchased to strip and oil. But it's finally complete!

Here's the before shot(this pic hides a lot of the scratches and dings)

And here's the same guitar completed stripped and oiled.

I always thought the RG2127x looked better without the ugly TKF(trans flat black) finish. The natural mahogany looks sooo much better!!

Cheers,

Budd

I should mention that the trem saddles on this thing was pretty rusted/corroded. Been fixed up since then as you can see.

I have the same question, what kind of oil and what was the process. I want to do the same to my jem project. Yours look great, nice work. Thats the way it should have been. chef21

P.S. this might be a stupid question but does it leave it with an oily finish, or does it dry nicely. What does the finished product feel like.

It sure looks like I replaced them didn't I?? They're actually the same saddles. What I did was remove the rust and corrosion with some chemical rust remover then chipped away at the remaining bits of finish and level sanded the tops of the saddles. I refinished the tops of the saddles using some grey/silver automotive touch up pain to match the rest of the saddle. I didn't feel like bringing the saddle or bridge with me so I had to eye ball the color and I'm so glad it turned out ok.

I used some Tung Oil. Circa 1850 Tung Oil to be exact. Stripped the guitar using some Furniture stripper(chemical stripper also by Circa 1850).

It does leave an oily finish until it's fully dried. When it's dried the oily finish is gone and takes quite long to dry properly. I actually use some 0000 steel wool to sand off the excess that's dried before I apply a 2nd coat to avoid heavy buildup. The final product looks a whole lot better than I expected it to actually.

Generally for wood finishes like this I'd go with 4 coats (at least I do when I do barewood oiled necks).

PS. It looks like some of my fellow Canadians here are looking to do the same thing with their guitars eh?

Re: My RG2127x Oiled Mahogany

I want to do it to the guitar on the left in the pic. I am going to put a high flame tiger maple veneer on it and a pearl binding

So do you just wipe the oil on liberaly, letit sit, sand and re do.
