My "Universe" project completed.

This was originally a 7421BK that I was utterly bored with so I modofied
that crap out of it. I ended up going with some color changing paint that
shifts from green to blue to purple depending on the angle you're looking at
it. The mods I did were: monkey grip, uv/jem style input jack, went from
fixed bridge to trem, sanded neck smooth (gloss = ICK), scalloped frets 21-
24, and added a locknut to the neck.

Playability wise, this guitar feels and plays way better than it did as a
7421. I'm attributing this mainly to the sanded neck and the fact that its
got a real bridge now.

More Pics Here

I painted the trussrod cover and cavity covers a different 'shade' of color
changing paint (purple/magenta/gold). The 'two' colors seem to really
complement each other well at any angle.

You've probably noticed there aren't any pickups in it at the moment. In my
mind, there's three options I'm considering (asthetically) which are neon
green pickups (would match the headstock logo nicely), black, or chromed.
Opinions?

That is B-E-A-UTIFUL! Damn, you did an amazing job on that sucker.. a 7421 turned to a custom jem/uv, thats awesome! Since you got the green Ibanez logo, green pickups MIGHT go well, if not that, then I'd say just black. Did you do the binding on the headstock too?

Re: My "Universe" project completed.

Actually, I painted on the 'binding' using some Testors "Steel" color model
paint . Reason I did that is the color changing paint refused to stick to
the very edges of the headstock for some reason so pseudo-binding was
necessary...maybe the base coat didn't get onto the edges very well
although it looked like it did before I put color coat over it. It turned out
looking great though thanks to the miricle of masking tape

Looks very nice, and much better than what it was originally. I see what you mean about green pickups matching the headstock, but I'm also not sure how well they would fit with the body colour, but might look great. Praps you could try mocking it up (either in real life with some green card, or take a pic of the front and photoshop it) - might give you a better idea of whether it's going to look right before to spend out on pickups. Nice work tho, looks good.

Ah yes, I can see it now on the picture of just the headstock , looks great though! I might just try that on some of my guitars.

Yeah, the steel colored Testors paint is an excellent match to the silver dot inlays on the neck.

Wow, that's pretty rude. Why say anything at all if you don't like it? Sheesh.

I think it looks great. I wish I had the skill and equipment to do stuff like this.

Re: My "Universe" project completed.

That looks great! I love the color changing paint idea. I can't tell, does the headstock match the body?

I would avoid the green pups. Chrome ones usually look cheesy (to me). If they don't match the pickguard really well then it might ruin the pickguard's effect. Black is pretty safe. I would vote for that route.

What are you talking about? And why?

They both look fine, especially the pickguard.

Looks really nice! the testors paint on the headstock was a great idea, BTW. I wish I had a black guitar I could "bind" in red right about now!
