New Ibanez JPM7 style project!

Psted this on Sevenstring as well, but any help on finishing this would be appreciated.
Got the body of the bay; one piece mahogany back with two piece thick and heavily figured maple (imagine something like the old USA Custom Exotic Woods series...) gathered most of the bits and pieces and this is how it looks now.

These photos are without any kind of grain enchancement, taken with a cell phone camera.
So now all it's left to do is finish the body somehow worthy of its beauty (swirl it maybe? )
Have not really decided on the color yet, maybe light blue (transparent of course), or all natural...
Any tips on how to make the grain of the wood pop would be really appreciated!! As I understand, I should apply a dark (black or brown) stain and then sand most of it down to the wood again and then apply the stain of choice... Is this the prefered method?

+1 on the amber finish... Some companies do use a darker stain first, then sand it off. This keeps stain in the grain, and removes the rest. Then restain with color of choice. Keep up posted on that killer guitar. Who was the **** seller??

Awesome score! Have you considered a burst finish? A dragonburst maybe?

JP's EBMMs are burst.

Keep us posted on the progress! I'm sure it'll turn out fantastic, no matter which way you choose to go!

PS: found this link on another post. Check all stages. It could help!

I like Bamaha blue finishes. Here are a few examples of a Suhr with that colour.

Everyone on SS thinks to do a Picasso and I think you should do one in a red or green.

Re: New Ibanez JPM7 style project!

You don't want to stain it and definitely don't swirl over that maple! For figured maple you want to use an aniline dye. It dyes the grain and makes it "pop" after it's clear coated, that's what PRS, Carvin, Warmoth, Suhr, etc... use on the figured maple tops. Stain more sits on top but the dye gets into the grain more.

Hope that helps...
