Re: noob
ofcourrse not. problem with EMGs are that they are uni-tone pickups. when you roll down the volume knob, you lose all the character in the sound. But in Passive pickups you can roll down the volume and get cleaner sound and also the pickups actually use body wood properties to churn out a tone.
For a
basswood guitar
body, TZ7 and AN7 are the holy combos. I have them in my RG7620. TZ7 can handle low end REALLY well...keeps the sound TIGHT ang chugging. even at the tuning like Ab or G !!

Re: noob
The nearest passive pickup I can think of that will get you an EMG level of power would be a DiMarzio X2N (available in 7 string version). But that's just going by what I've read and the songs I've heard. No routing needed. You shouldn't need to route for most pickups which are in this sort of housing.
Talking of replacement humbuckers, my Evo 7 still hasn't arrived, in fact the woman working at the store is in LA at the moment and doesn't get back till next Tuesday, then will send it. She says it's like, the only Evo 7 in the country
Thing is I probably won't have time to install it before I leave for uni

Hehe hit
http://www.dimarzio.com
and check their 7
string pickup
listing
Also, I'd take a DiMarzio D Sonic 7 in the bridge over a
Tone Zone
7. The DS7 has the thunder of the TZ without the accompanying mud

This is, quite frankly, crap. I used to think this too until Drew over on sevenstring.org posted a clip from a Schecter Hellraiser doing a floyd-esque solo section that sounded like a strat. It was really surreal...
Honestly the problem with EMGs is that there's no going back if you don't like them, so be sure it's what you want before you install them
Personally I'd go with a
DiMarzio Air Norton
in the neck and a D Sonic 7 in the bridge. It's an amazing combo in basswood, I've got it in a 7321 here and it sounds amazing.
