pickups!

well, i already know i'll be putting an air norton 7 in the neck position, but i'm still looking for the bridge one. it has to sound as clear and tight as the steve's special, but i'd like a sound that bites a little more, with also a warm body shaking crunch when lowering the volume knob.
the pickups are for a mahog body

yeha, the guys from dimarzio say that that blaze series is tonally modeled after the steve's special, or at least that the SS is the nearest compatable 6. the custom's got a little more power to it, and given the change in bodywoods from basswood to mahogany, it really sounds like the ideal pickup for you.

Why not use Duncans? Their 7-string pickup lineup is much more versatile. They even have alnico based 7-string pickups and best of all, they do custom jobs.

if i were to have a custom bridge pickup, i'd go for a seven string version of a mix between the steve's special for the notes clarity, the fred for its spongy and "aw" vowel sound, and the evolution for the hot sounding high notes... well
tell me more about those duncans before i decide to go for the blaze custom!

From your initial description, i'd say that you're after a Tone Zone! Listen to the Dream Theater 'Images and Words' album, Petrucci had Tone Zone-equipped guitars one that one. You can can get a good idea of the sound by listening to the chunky riffs in 'Pull Me Under'.

Personally, I'm not too crazy about the Tone Zone in a mahogany guitar, though. It starts to mud up a bit and this will only be made even more pertinent with a 7-string. I'd check out some Duncans. I like the Duncan Distortion and Custom in 6-string guitars, but would try the Distortion or a JB in a 7-string with the '59 as the neck pickup.

I have one in my alder-bodied USRG10, and it sounds sooooo tight and articulate! Power chords sound wonderful, and full arpeggiated chords are very, well, articulate! However, i have never tried one in a mahagony body... i forgot that you were using a mahagony body.

I would highly recommend the Blaze Custom - like a hot-rodded Blaze (II) with a higher spike in the midrange - some of that 'aw' sound...

I have SD JB in bridge position, and SD '59 in neck. They both kick ass and are much better than stock Dimarzios.

pickups for 7620

since we're on the topic of pups for 7s.... i was lookin for some for mine. i wanted something with a vintage bite, but still have enough power for a screaming lead tone. the other guitar player in my band just has a six string and is uh.... a bit limited, so im either chuggin' along down below or off lost in the upper frets somewhere. these duncuns sound pretty interesting... can anyone help me out?
