RG1527 reputation

Hi everyone, been here reading you for the last two years, recently created an account...and i was wondering.
Some of you guys seems to consider the rg1527 is a great guitar, some others apparently believe that it's not quite a good guitar....
I don't really know what to think.
I ain't no specialist, i just happen to know the floyd isn't as good as what they use to put instead.. The pickups are "sufficient" but kind of muddy and the painting and clear coating is really fragile...
But apart from that.... Once you changed the pickups....

Is it the woods the guitar is made from....? Besides the floyd and maybe the pickups, why is the 7620 so much more "sexier" to you guys?

I'd really love to have answers, the 1527 is the guitar i own and i'm satisfied with it, it may not be heaven but it seems real nice to me.

I wouldn't mind owning any of those.

I guess the difference is that the RG1527 is a Prestige and the RG7620 isn't. But don't get fooled by this, as when the RG7620s where built, Ibanez weren't using the Prestige trade mark in their guitars.
The body woods are the same. Not sure about neck construction, but they might be identical. Quality-wise, they're about the same level.

Besides that, the Ibz pickups on the RG1527 might not sound as good as the DiMarzio loaded in the RG7620. That's the only difference.

I love the tone of the RG7620 and I will nail one of those when I have the opportunity! I even found it better (tone-wise) than the UV777PBK (which I found a bit sterile).
However, I have never "test driven" an RG1527 with DiMarzios.

Anyone who owns a DiMarzio loaded RG1527, please give us your input...

Well i do own one "loaded" with dimarzios, evolution in bridge... Neck pickup is still the ibanez one...
I really like it... but never tried any 7620...
The Uv 777pbk...is it the universe that is actually available in the current ibanez lineup? if so, i tried it too, but an "old one"... made around 00 or 02, really liked it, but i can't compare since i play on a peavey bandit and i tried this universe on a dual rectifier....
Well, i could say one thing, playing seemed easier on the 1527 than on the uv777pbk.

Why? Were both guitars correctly setup?

I have also found the '97 RG7620 more playable than the '99 UV777PBK. Both with identical setups, done from scratch, by me.

I love mine.
Loaded with dimarzio d activators.
Trem is awesome,always in tune.
Awesome neck I just got it out of the box and lowered action till almost 0 and no buzzes.
The only thing I can complain is about its looking cause I love ebony fingerboard with white binding and it hasn't it.
But about playability it's amazing.

I always thought the 1527 just replaced the 7620? All i know is i was planning to get the 7620 and when i went to order it the only 7 string with a trem was the 1527 (dont know about the uv) Anyway, i love it all the same

The RG1527 did take the place of the RG7-620.
I have one of each - the two are quite similar all around, and the 7620 really helped to define for me what I personally was looking for in a 7-string.
Of course, the 1527 has the EdgePro7 - decent design, but I'm pretty sure I'd rather have a LoPro7 if I had that choice... but I've got the EP7 working just fine, fluttering well, very nice return-to-zero, etc. so I'm not outright complaining.
Neck construction of the 1527 is technically superior in terms of method, rigidity, and the volute, as opposed to the scarf joint of the 7620.
(I re-profile the neck shapes quite a lot anyway, but I like both as 'platforms' to start from.)
The fret size on the 1527 seems slightly smaller than the 7620 (and, again, no complaint outright, but if I were choosing feature-by-feature, I'd duplicate the giant 7620 fret wire size... =])
Very significant difference; out of the box, the 7620 had, for most people's tastes, far superior pickups, although I found the bridge one was a tad shy of a certain tightness that I look for.
Having said that, I always replace pickups - the bridge one at the very least.
With the 7620, I found that the neck pickup /really/ suits me well, so I have actually sought those out.
So, both my 7620 and 1527 have DiMarzio Blaze Custom bridge plus stock Rg7620 neck pickups. Actually, so does my UV777BK - my UV7BK (black/green) has the Blaze Custom in the bridge, but I haven't changed the neck pickup, as I haven't found a stock 7620 neck pickup in green =] (and don't want to use Toppers to accomplish it).

Over all sound/playability wise - very very similar all around. 1527 is a very nice offspring of the 7620; either would be money well spent if you're debating getting one or the other. Consider the points made above if you might find some little tidbit that tips the scales one way or the other... plus, of course, the 7620s tend to be used, hence tend to cost a tidy bit less.

Crazy guitar, yes, both guitar were correctly setup... but now that i'm trying to remember it ( maybe 2 or 3 years ago), i think the strings were thicker on the UV... i don't know... even though i now use thicker strings, i still remember the UV as a hard playing guitar (i'm pretty sure the action was way lower compared to my 1527 at that time).
Maybe i just imagined this, but i played that precise universe many times and it always felt hard to play.

Steve, thank you for all the infos, i think i understand now why when i went to buy the 1527 the guy was urging me to buy a used 7620 rather than a new 1527.

... just to follow up, I happened upon a deal on a gently-used 1527 this past Saturday, and brought her home, so now I've got a second, making for twins.

1527s are popular, though for me I'd prefer if there was something that was to the S7320 what the RG1527 is to the 7321. I'm a born again S'er you see.
