Neck-thru vs. bolt-on may be a valid debate, but build quality is not part of that debate. Just ask Tom Anderson or John Suhr.

I had a Carvin DC727, and now own an RG1527, and the quality is the same, regardless of how the neck is attached.

To each their own. I think the royal blue is beautiful. Enough so that two of my guitars are this color.

The S series 7 string, at least the 7420, was obscenely overpriced for a guitar with stock V-series pickups and a TRS trem. It's no wonder it didn't sell well. Someone on another board got one for a fair priced used, however, and wasted no time swapping pickups. The TRS performs well for him though.
I might be a little harsh on the K-7, because I hate KoRn, but it's still not worth $1,400 to me. I couldn't bring myself to pay that much when I can get an RG7620 and replace the body with mahogany for about $300. It also has that ass-ugly inlay. Bah!

As for the Universe, It's a great instrument, but again, the price tag is too hefty for me to justify it.

...and my baby, the S series, I just love the cozy thin body.

It's all personal preference. I do, however, want to apologize for dumping a whole load of negativity on you all. I was in a bad mood for my first post, and I'm sorry about my slanderous reviews.

I was also thinking about this but when I realized I'd have to

1) Probably get a non-mahogany body for it
2) Definitely get good pickups instead of those PAF crappers
3) Get an ebony fretboard with stainless steel frets

Well, suffice to say it doesn't sound that cheap anymore ):
It'd maybe be worth it if the Lo-Pro Edge 7 was non-radiused because I want a 0 radius 7-string.

*ahem* if you're DEAD set on a s-series 7, Rich Harris at the swirly banner above has a S5407 at what's a pretty reasonable price for one of those available - I might fight you for it, but I'm not much of a fan of black guitars (although, it'd look hot stripped and stained)

-D

EDIT - corrected model #, per Rich's comment below. Doh!
Although Im not a big fan of black myself too, I'd get that S 5407 over any S 7420 anyday. I think it would look cool stripped and stained. This one Rich has is very tempting especially for the price he's asking for it.

Re: RG2027 production halted - editorial

I had an 540S7 and it is a very good guitar. The set up ihad wasnt so great so the guitar felt a little stiff. Also, the 22 frets may be an isse to some people. The inlays are also pretty lame, but it is a solid guitar. The tone is a little dark or opaque for my tastes though. Mine was black, as the one Rich has for sale.

Id take it over an RG7620, but I probably would chose a K7 over it.... and I would take any universe (including the black and green one) over it.

It is a very interesting guitar to customize though. With a figured venner and a sunburst it would look killer. I did that with a 2003 S470 and it turned out very well.

What's so lame about a PAF7 anyway? I thought they sounded quite good.

Re: RG2027 production halted - editorial

The PAF's are very "traditional" sounding pickups, but hardly "bad" sounding - they're traditional for a reason.

a 0" radius? Tsovoran, you're a sick puppy. It may be radiused, but it's not THAT hard to shim an Edge - I believe Rich can hook you up with bridge shims, or you can probably improvise something - start with a soda can, maybe.

I figure I'd be out maybe $300-400 for a fretboard replacement and a refret, for a blank board, more if I did a custom inlay. So, Say you could score a K7 for 600 - reasonable cosidering the 7620's went for $450. A grand later, you've got a seven without that hideous inlay and either a blank ebony or blank maple board, two options Ibanez doesn't currently offer. I've reconciled myself to mahogany - as long as you do things to brighten it up and cope with the midrange (i.e - maple/ebony board for attack and/or maple top, slightly scooped pickup set) it can sound awesome for a seven, and the two body color choices are quite good, IMO (in fact, I love the matched pickup tops, and would almosy hope the stock ones work out, so I could keep them).

Like I said, it'd be a cool project.

Shawn, if you want to grab that S5407, depending on what you're asking I might take your s-series 7 off your hands and strip it down to bare mahogany...

Well, seems I was dead wrong here.

Um, the market price varies - I'd say $1200-1300 is probably the typical range, occasionally a litle higher and rarely below (though I think I recall someone grabbing one for $900 not too long ago, which was absurd).

Harder is actually finding one for sale. if you find one in the condition you're looking for for less than $1300, then grab it rather than trying to wait and save yourself a hundred or two simply because they pop up so infrequently.
