Stripping paint from RG7621

Anybody know what solvents to use? I just aquired a RG7621 (white) and I am thinking about repainting it. It's beat. But I may not...It's got character. It was abused...oxidation on metal parts and dings and chips every where, but over all it seems quite solid. I may just do a good clean on it and perhaps replace the pickups with a tone zone in the bridge and a d-activator in the neck. Any thoughts? thanks.

Re: Stripping paint from RG7621

RG finishes can be hard to remove. I had success with a heat gun on two RG bodies, plus lots of sanding. No chemicals I used would touch it, even left overnight. There are products out there which will do it but I can't remember the names, plus they're probably a bit evil.

Try the heat gun.

Anyway, congrats on the 7 string. I just got an RG7421 for a good price and I'm doing it up. It's a great guitar, but the pickups are not. D-Activator is a consideration, only I'm wondering if it's a bit too hot. I'm looking for something to brighten mine up. Basswood isn't very interesting, so I wonder if I can find the pickup equivalent of adding a maple top.

I think Ibanez uses polyurethane to finish their guitars, so you'd need a methylene chloride based stripper to pull off that kind of paint.

Seconding Dee's advice.
The heat gun is by far the best way to go.

I'll be the third one to say about the heat gun! I stripped a bass out of an unsuccessful swirl really easy! You will have to sand though.

A white one? Sell it to me, don't strip it! Those are so rare, and was my very first seven string back in '98. I painted mine and have come to regret it .

I will trade you a black 7621 for the white one. You can strip the paint off the black one all day long!
