talkin' smack 'bout 7s...
man, just picked up the new issues of guitar world and guitar player, and between the 2 of them there are like 5-6 negative comments/discussions about seven strings...
they seem like comments that should have popped up 2 years ago when they were really popular...

I don't understand why anybody would care whether somebody plays a 6 or a 7. It's the music that comes out of it that matters.

I don't read many guitar magazines anymore, but I wouldn't pay much attention to what anyone says on such topics... who cares! If someone wanted to a play a detuned 4 string guitar, its none of my buisness...

You know, this is pretty evil of me to say, but I'm glad! It just gives me that much more advantage over the rest of the herd.
Did I really just say that?
shameful!

Wes Borland did this, and with some really cool results. But he's also played 7-strings, and currently, 6-strings, and he's cool no matter how many strings, just because his music is so eccentric and unique. As was said before, it doesn't matter what they use, it's how they use it...

(duh)..."it's just notes"

That's a great quote!
I'm amazed at how disrespectful and narrow-minded some people can be, especially about something as trivial as the number of strings a guitar has.
Did anyone slam
Keith Richards
for taking one string off his Tele? Or
Charlie Hunter
for having two brains?
To those people, i say, "Shut up and play yer damn guitar."

Screw it. There's plenty of people out there that have started using them. probably in reference to the nu-metal crowd that really didn't need them...

I have one word for the 7-string pundits... PETRUCCI!!!
My only disappointment is that we 7-stringers don't have more axes to choose from...

yes....but the market being what it is currently we can get them for dirt cheap.
I think the thing is beating the stereotype which got established in the nu-metal phase of things. Whether it's true or not is inconsequential, but it is changing everyday and being slowly chipped away at.

that's what so funny about it, it seems to me to be a stereotype that may have had some merit 2-3 years ago, but now, all of those bands have moved away from 7 strings (to detuned 6 strings). it just seemed odd to me that 2 different magazines would have this sort of anti-7string sentiment in the same month. because, like, thats so 1999...
