Try this !!!
Trying to get a bolder, boomier, dungeony sound from my 7 I removed the 5 way selector switch from my 7620. I replaced it with a 3 position switch which enabled me to get the full output from each pickup. No split power robbing positions turned out to be the key. I'm nailing the bottom sound in songs like " sick of life " (godsmack) better than ever !!! I play it through a
Peavey Triple XXX
head and marshall 4X12 cab. It really makes a differance.

I wouldn't think you lost power cause it was a 5 way switch, but maybe it was an inferior or not properly soldered switch.
I'm partial to 3 ways switches myself at times.

positions 1/3/5 are now simply 1/2/3 and are no different. all you did was remove positions 2 & 4 along with their tonal variety

i would say you had a defective switch to start with.
anyway most people use positions 1 and 5 so maybe the 3 position is easier

True, 1 and 5 are the most popular... But some time, record a rhythm track through a distorted amp with position 4. I think you might like it- definition like you wouldn't believe. (even better if you double it with the bridge- 5, i think- and mix the double back a bit, for some added crunch and depth)

maybe Ron (7stringer) meant that he soldered the 3way switch in order to have either full neck & full bridge at position 3, instead of split neck + split bridge at positions 2-4?
well,
maybe it depends on which 7 Ron owns...
(hey Ron...)

Hmm. flipped through a few ibanez wiring charts the other day. the 4th position on the 7-string 5-way wiring scheme is the same as the middle position on the JPM series, which is known for being a killer rhythm sound. no wonder.
All you people complaining about the phenominal cost of that switch, salvation is at hand.
