i have 2 finger power chord on 7th and six, and one finger power chord on 6th, so if you were to think of it as taking off the top string and tuning the remaining strings to drop d putting the top string back on and tuning it to a 2 finger bar chord so it would be sumting,d,a,d,g,b,e

Wait a minute, when you say 'top' string do you mean the one nearest to you or the highest pitched one? Usually when people say 'top' it means the latter.

I assume you mean the one nearest to you, and that what you're saying is instead of standard BEADGBE (from lowest *pitch* to highest) you have it going xDADGBE where x is the string you want to know what to tune it to. And you want it so for those lowest pitched two strings (the x and D) to get a power chord (if that's what you meant) you use two fingers. In that case I would say A.

yeah dude thats eccsactly wat i meant, i tune like this becuase i play alot of lamg of god and they tune standard drop d and i use that alot in my own stuff but can add heavier with the lowest string that being the one closest to me, dose ne one else tune liek this

I don't think casual players or musicians do this, though I have spotted the odd one or two drop-something tuned bands with a guitarist using a 7 so I dunno.

At least you'll be one of the first to experiment with it. Should be quite fun and chuggy.

Personally for drop-something tunings the route I like to or would take would be to use a 6-string unless it's drop A or lower.

So you want to be able to play one-finger powerchords on both your thickest string, and second thickest string? Drop-D, but with one more "dropped" note below?

Try thick to thin G-D-A-D-G-B-E. Though, with the G on what's normally the low "B" string and the regular A above it, you can't do three-note one-finger chords, but just two note ones.

When I drop-tune on my seven to play drop-D stuff, I usually go A-D-A-D-G-B-E. This way, you still have a drop-D guitar but if you either 1.) accidentally or 2.) intentionally include your lowest string too, you're just adding a fourth below (or basically doubling the 5th above, as they're enharmonic equivalents).

Though, Drop-A works pretty well too, on it's own (A-E-A-D-G-B-E).

Also worth a nod for more Tool-like moments, A-D-A-D-G-A-D. It's a celtic/world tuning, generally, but with the added low A it absolutely kills for big suspended voicings.

i do similar ... although i prefer a drop c tuning ... so i go 1 step lower on my baritone ... GCGCFAD

i won't say it's common ... my six-stringer bandmate always glares at me saying why are we doing this tuning weirdness again?

i think it rules. seven stringers are used to having the normal six strings after the extra low string so it's an easy transition for us. you get the drop c (or d) shredding drop response ... but still ahve that low range 7th string for those 'special' notes.

but six stringers just aren't exposed to worring about extra strings.
