VIK Build thread (AMAZING woods)
I didn't think anyone here would care much for this but someone asked me to put up some pics of where my build is currently sitting at...so here we go:
Blueprint thing:
Where the build is now:
For anyone curious the specs are:
Mahogany body
Burl maple top
Birdseye neck (with ebony fillets)
Fanned frets (25-27)
Black binding
ABM bridge
Gotoh 510 tuners (changed our minds a week ago hha)
Jumbo frets (stainless steel)
Custom
Vik
Pickups with wooden bobbins
Here's an idea of what the finished product will look like (body shape and woods will be different):

That's going to be amazing. Vik are making some of the best guitars on the planet. What's the turnaround time on a Vik custom order these days???

I think if a guitarist doesn't care about a guitar like this, they don't care about guitar. It looks fantastic, expensive, and I'm sure its worth every penny!

Thanks, but I can't take credit there, it's off one of the Periphery shirts.
I am, however, considering changing my username to djono...

I ordered in August of 2011, which is slightly before he got very popular and got artist orders from people like Thordendal from Meshuggah. If someone put in an order now I would estimate
at least
3 years before its done. You can actually see his full waitlist on his website.
Interestingly, no Vik has ever been sold (!!!) used so it looks like a 3 year wait is the only option for people now unless they want to try and throw money at someone who has one already. You could try and buy someones spot on the waitlist or wait until Vik does another "vik in a week" thing but the last one that went up for auction that way ended up costing more than $6000 USD.
Vik's communication is great though and I would recommend putting an order in with him if you can.

Re: VIK Build thread (AMAZING woods)
Thanks for the info!!! Yeah 3 years is a long time to wait but that's the way it is with these in-demand builders. I'd be interested in picking one of those up at some point but I've just ordered 2 Daemoness builds in the last month with more possibly to follow.

It's a fanned fret guitar. Think multiple scale lengths on the one guitar, so you can have a more even/better-feeling tension on every string.
e.g. Most people that drop tune or down tune on a 7 string opt for a 27" scale length. All Jem's and Universe's are 25.5" scale.
The added 1.5" of scale length increases the tension on the strings, so you don't get flub. The flip side is that the fret spacing is further apart (picture 2 more frets added behind the nut, so frets 1 and 2 are up there). So you've gotta re-train your "muscle memory" a little.
Fanned fret guitars give you the best of both worlds. A scale length and tension perfect/that-you're-use-to for solo'ing on the high strings, and a scale length that won't flub out on the lower strings.
That's the basic gist.
