What would you do To an ax7221?

Starting from completly original-what would you do to make it a tone monster-perfect for metal?

What would I do? Well, I'd swap it for an RG, but assuming you have your heart set on the AX, the obvious answer is to replace the stock pickups.

To be honest I haven't heard the stock pickups so I'd give them a listen first. However, assuming they don't sound good, I'd put in replacements. Good choices would be Dimarzio Tone Zone 7 or Evo 7 pickups. From *Seymour Duncan, the Invader 7 or JB 7 picskups would do the trick. For extreme metal, I'd investigate putting in EMG-707 pickups. Installing EMG-707 will require routing the body.

I know bashing is not allowed on this forum, but those are completely not my style. I would use it for a nice Pete Townshend / Paul Stanley stage move. I guess that kinda bashing is ok here!

Invader 7
Can you say: "H E A V Y"???? This pickup is way way way too heavy... The low end, the power, the shrill... Yikes! I don't even dare to play the 6 string version!!!!!!

I'd say put in a set of 707's and call it a day.

I'd sell it on E-Bay under the name "Ed Roman" and then retire early.

I'd also slap some EMG-707s in there, maybe refinish (flat black/graphic/something metal-ish), maybe even custom hardware to match.

But I'm curious... it's a 72 series, meaning it's made in Korea, right? Why isn't there a Japan made one????

There was a Jap made version, if you look around ebay you could probably find one.

Leave it hanging in the store and buy a Japanese made RG7 instead. Sorry but i couldn't resist. *

Pickup change is the only cost effective solution for altered tone. Good luck... glen

With the money you'd spend on pickups and other possible mods, you could buy a RG7.

If you still have the chance, I'd look around for the AX7521. Its Japanese and is built better then the 7221.

Hey, I love RG's over AX's too, but sometimes when you crave the tone of mahogany and all you see are basswood RGs around, the AX's really are pretty nice guitars. (the jap ones)
