Re: whats the cheapest 7 string ibanez with tremelo?

Current model: RG1527, edge pro trem, V pickups, not sure of current pricing but is at least $700 or so

Discontinued models:
GRX720, entry level model with vintage trem, seems to sell for about $200
RG7420, TRS trem, V pickups, seems to sell for $300 or so
RG7620, similar to 7420 but with Lo-Pro 7 and DiMarzios, usually $300-$500

I wouldn't even think of buying the GRX. 7420 is decent but if you're picky about your trems, jump for a 7620.

I know you asked about an Ibanez, but in one of the new mail order catalogs I saw a Washburn 7 string for $199. It looked almost exactly like an Ibanez, and has a licensed Floyd. If I were looking for a cheap new 7, I'd personally go for that, over a GRX.

Just thought I'd throw that at ya.

If that's from the Musica-uno-dos-tres catalog I think it's a mistake. The Washburn WG587v (the one with the Floyd) hasn't been made in many years and, as far as I know, everyone's stock has been sold.

By the way, the 587v is made in Korea, not China like the 587 (hardtail).

I'm not sure of the model number, right now. I don't have my catalogs with me.

Bear in mind that you get what you pay for. If you spend $200 on a trem-equipped seven, expect it to stay in tune as well as you'd expect a $200 trem-equipped seven. If you catch my drift.

Re: whats the cheapest 7 string ibanez with tremelo?

I've had $200 trem equipped six strings, and with a good setup, they were playable. Would a seven string really be much different?

I was just eyeing the Washburn up, because I doubt that I'd ever use a seven for much more than fooling around, or maybe an occasional song. Not something I'd want to spend much on, at the present time.

I agree that a $200 7 string could be a waste of money.

Even some of the mid-range priced 7's are very iffy so i wouldn't expect a lot from a $200 trem-equipped 7 that costs less than a decent tremolo does by itself.

Do cheaper sevens tend to be worse than cheaper sixes, because of how the low B string responds? Must be, eh?

Agreed. It was my first 7-string. I've had since '98 and still love it.
You cant go wrong with a 7620.
I recommend the 7620 GN.

Re: whats the cheapest 7 string ibanez with tremelo?

i went straight from a cheapo 6 string (OLP MM1, completely knackered now and not worth getting it sorted out) to a 1527 and i havnt even considered going back to a 6 string since!!!!
ive never owned a decent quality 6 so i dont really have a very informed opinion but ive had no problems whatsoever with my 1527, i bought it kinda on a whim cos i was after a new guitar and i saw 1527s goin cheap on music(122+1)

Re: whats the cheapest 7 string ibanez with tremelo?

When you consider how cheap 7620's can be had, there's really no reason for buying anything else for a first 7, if you want a RG. Pro quality all the way, and probably the best bang for your buck you can get in ANY ibanez these days.
