XL users: Which strings?

Which strings do u use?

Currently, I use 0.009 strings and I find them fine.. I'm considering moving up to 0.010 to have a little more fat on the lower strings..

Anyone know if string buzz increases or decreases if you move up one gauge?

Thanks

String buzz should decrease as the string gets tighter but you may want a proper set up. I use 11's on mine with a 72 for the low string (tuned to standard pitch plus a low A). I had it setup by my favorite local tech a few weeks ago. He did the action, tweaked te truss rod, and opened up the nut a bit to make some room for the heavier strings. It handles the heavier string with no problem , and it plays just great with sweet action and no buzzing anywhere.

I suggest starting with a light-top/heavy-bottom set, then adding a nice thick 7th string. This will give you a lot of power on the bass strings, but leave the top light enough for leads. Most LT/HB sets have a 52 for the 6th, so a 72 would be apporpriate for the 7th, to keep the feel of the tension consistent.

In my experience, heavier strings will reduce slightly at the initial pick-attack. The main effect tonally is that you'll have a less snappy sounding attack, and more sustain. If your action is really low, it will buzz more, though, because the added mass will tend to keep vibrating against the frets. That's only if it's REALLY low.

Jim, I'm curious about your setup. Do you have a feeler gauge handy to check your string clearance? Right now I have a 65 as my 7th string, and it still buzzes slightly at 1/8" measured at the 12th fret.

No I don't have anything really accurate to measure with, but the tech who works on my guitars knows that I like my action low, but I'm also not willing to live with any buzzing anywhere on the neck, so that's the basic cut off point when he's doing my setups.

I buy my low stings as singles from www.juststrings.com. I usually buy 12 at a time.
