10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
I just bought a backstop from a fellow jemsiter and am quite eager to install it. However in order to do so, I need to switch from 4 to 3 tremolo back-springs. Unfortunately, I use a 0.10 / 0.49 string set which is quite stiffer than your usual 0.09 set and I can't seem to balance my trem with only 3 springs (they cannot be installed in a pyramid fashion either). Anyone run into this problem before? I'm guessing it's either downtuning or moving down to niner's but I figured I'd ask and see if someone knows some way around this.

Re: 10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
All of my Edge-equipped guitars currently have 10s with three springs and it's no trouble at all. The claws are screwed in just about as far as they can possibly go, but it works fine.

Re: 10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
i have 010-052 strings on my guitar and my springs are far from being all screwed in. I tune down 2 steps maybe that is the reason. But try fresh springs or add one more.

Re: 10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
The standard Ibanez springs are 52mm long but they also sell 47mm springs.
If you got 3 of those shorter springs they would probably give you as much tension as your 4 regular springs.
By the way, what guitar are you fitting the backstop to ?
The reason i ask is because it will onyl fit in certain
Ibanez guitars
.Most of the newer Edge-Pro equipped models don't have enough space in the spring-cavity route for the backstop to clear the springs and the cavities are generally routed at an angle whereas the backstop should ideally be mounted on a flat surface.

10s on all mine too, stock springs arranged in parallel, and yes the claw is screwed in a long way, but I've had no problems with it.

The Backstop keeps the trem from going back...not up...

Two JEMs and a UV, all with 10/46s (+56 on UV), three springs parralel, not a problem, and springs not completely screwed in

I use 10's and have never had the need to use more than three springs.

i have never used more than 3 springs.
i use 10-56, but i seem to get better tension when i put the springs in a arrow formation.

Re: 10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
THX for the input guys.
ATM My backsprings are set all the way back and the trem is still a bit too high. Even if I could get the LO-PRO to stabilize in a decent position I wouldn't be playing this axe since the trem has a very weird feel (which I don't like) due to the spings being stretched all the way.
I'll be going back to 0.09's and probably tuning up half a step. I've always wanted to try the bite of thin strings with the feel of harder tension.

Re: 10's with only 3 springs = POSSIBLE? (backstop)
I use .10-.52's and I couldn't manage to balance them with 3 standard springs, so I ordered extra hard ones from an online store (German). They just worked out perfect. I have the
claw screws
less buried in than they would be with a .09-.46 set with the standard springs...
