22 fret vs 24 fret

Would a 22 fret neck work on an RG body or would there be intonation problems where there should have been a 24 fret?

The bridge position may be an issue as far as intonation goes. Every guitar is different, the bridge aint gonna always be in the same place, like trying to put a strat neck on a les paul, dunno if it would work.

I'm betting you will have problems.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

I've been guessing that the bridge may be differently positioned, as the neck scale is shorter, but wondering if anyone else has tried. Yeah, thinking about it, I might run into problems, if i tried it.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

I'm not sure the intonation could be adjusted that far, I'd be better off finding a 24 fret neck rather than a 22 fret, but I do love 22 frets, got a few of them and just seem to love the look of a 22 fret.

Look at it this way. You could, theoretically, retrofit extra frets on any neck if there was space allowed to do it without altering the intonation as well as rip of frets to make it a 21 fret or less. As long as the 12th fret is halfway between the nut and the bridge there's no problem. Or get a fretless neck, tune up the strings and play along.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

Yea you could in theory fit extra frets, but from the nut to the bridge is a different distance. The scale is different. I found this out when I tried to swap cases round from a 24 fret Ibanez to a 22 fret Ibanez, the 24 fret was longer.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

the 22 fret neck probably will not work. scale length is definitely an issue and you will have major intonation issues. the only way it would work is if the neck that was originally on the rg was a 24 fret neck with the last 2 frets overhanging the heel of the neck. you can tell if there is space between neck pocket and the neck pickup (on the body). if the neck pickup is flush against the neck pocket and the guitar was originally fitted for a 24 fret neck, then only a 24 fret neck (without an overhang) will work.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

If they are both aanj then no it wont work.

It might work if it is an older heel joint.

Measure the scale length with the old neck in place, fit the new one and measure again. If the difference is outside half of the adjustment length of your bridge saddles, then you will have intonation problems, and it probably just wont work.

bingo. aanj is the key. the old heel had the 24 fret neck extension on it. much like the 22 on a 21 strat, but with a longer lip. so to make a long story short...no.

Re: 22 fret vs 24 fret

Actually, the old neck is interchangeable with any strat type neck but it looks like crap(just saw one on the Bay). I have also taken an old RG 24 fret neck and pulled the 23rd fret and cut thru to make a 22 fret Wizard neck. I have mounted those on a strat body and a saber body with excellent results and perfect intonation. The AANJ will not work at all as someone else said.
