Cool

7 string Floyds question

Hey All.......

A quick prelude before my question. I have a few Ibanez 7 string "in progress" projects hanging in my studio. For me, the hardest, and/or most expensive part to get, is the Floyd. I know theres the "Edge" and the "TRS". However, up untill last night, I had no idea what the difference was. A friend owed me some money, who also wheels & deals guitar parts. He got his hands on an Ibanez 7 string TRS. He asked if he could give it to me as a payment. Duh!!!
This thing is in awesome condition. Looks like it has never been used. However, when I went to install it into my RG7620 DNA Swirl. Well.........as most of you already know, it didnt fit. The spring block is obviously longer then the route for it. Now, it "appears" that even if it was routed a bit more for the block, that the over all width of the whole unit still wont fit into the recess.
I guess my question would be.........whats the difference in the two? I realize that the spring block is longer from end to end, and the thickness of the of the overall base plate (forgive my terminology) is way different. It "seems" that the TRS is designed to be like a top mount or something before the invention of the recess cavity.
My way out right now seems simple......my black & white swirled UV7Jem looks like it will accomodate the TRS, which has an actual stock Edge. So..........Ill simply swap the two. Somebody please give me an enlightenment explination of the TRS versus the Edge. Like I said, when my friend asked me if I wanted it, I "assumed" they were virtualy the same, with slight tweeked out differences. I didnt know they werent interchangable.
Thanks to any & all in advance..................

Re: 7 string Floyds question

the TRS bridges are pretty crappy. Edge 7 and Lopro 7 will fit in a 7620 route. I wouldn't use the TRS on anything really lol, I'd use any Edge/Lopro bridge.

Re: 7 string Floyds question

Definite NO on the TRS. You'll notice that the footprint of the trem is angled and different than the more square Edge7, Lopro Edge7, or even the Edge Pro. The Edge 7 and Lopro 7 are more or less interchangeable. The Edge Pro requires a different block route. (I have converted and Edge to Edge Pro route before, and although it worked, I can honestly say, why on earth would you do THAT?

The TRS is a decent trem, but nowhere near as efficient from a tuning stability perspective. I also hate the feel of them vs. the higher end Edge series. (I have one on my S7 - the trans blue one with wave inlays - whatever the model is.)

My overall opinion is if you intend on heavy bar work, stay away from the TRS. I dont just say that from the snob perspective, its simply an inferior trem.

Re: 7 string Floyds question

The LO-TRS and LO-TRS7s are not that bad. Sure they aren't an Edge, but they hold tune pretty much as well. The only gripe some have is that the trem feels a bit stiffer than the Edges. Try it out for yourself first and see what you think.

It's the LO-TRS II six string trems that are complete rubbish. People always categorize all TRS trems because of this one model that was rubbish.

Re: 7 string Floyds question

The original TRS trems aren't much better, I've stripped numerous saddles on them. The metal is very weak. Why they don't use hardened steel? idk..

Re: 7 string Floyds question

Well...........
Im gonna try it anyway, just because I dont really have a choice. I have a (cough) Dillion 7 string that I coverted to an Ibanez as much as I could. It has a very similar floyd. It does alright as far as staying in tune. Im just not use to the way it feels.

I appreciate and value everyones input and opinion........................which is why I came here to ask Ill be swapping it into my UV7Jem this weekend. Ill post here how it turns out. I dont use the whammy as much as I use to............
Ok wait......yes I do. Im just not as brutal with it now days. Ive calmed down alot with age phhhhhhhhhhhhht!!! as if!

Anyway.........thanks everyone! Ill be in touch!

Re: 7 string Floyds question

Hi Ranz, long time no speak...
My advice to you is that if you go with the TRS7 then add a 4th spring to it. I found that when there are 4 springs holding it it is much more stable tuning wise. A little harder to pull up and down but I belive you are strong enough to overcome this minor obstacle
