A dipping we will go....
Some people were asking to see some pics of these recent works, so here they are. They aren't swirls per se....not meant to be. I just call them "dips" as I'm literally dipping them in and out.
The bass is a beginner model GSR100. I had bought it for my neighbors kid. The kid's birthday was coming up and he wanted a bass. The parents asked me to repaint this one blue after I had bought it off the bay, but they decided to get an all in one package instead. So here I have another bass (and project) that I didn't need. So I used it as a chance to have some fun with it.
The head stock I altered as you can see with the groove that runs across it in the shape of a regular Ibanez 6 string head stock. The outside part of that groove is all black and will have a custom logo on it. The inner part will have the dip as you can see.
The base coat is a white holoflake. In one of the shots below you can see the sparkle of the holoflake. You can actually see the flake really well even in the darker grey areas. The dipping colors were black red and gold-flake.
The idea I had for this was to be primarily white or white-ish because I wanted that holoflake to show up predominantly. The dipping colors were to add an accent to it. I think it turned out pretty well. I used very little paint for the dip.
The RG body is a 321. The hardware for it is coming in next week, which will be black. Would've went with cosmo, but couldn't find a cosmo
fixed bridge
for it. I haven't done the neck yet. Just bought one to use for it, so when it comes in I'll dip it as well.
It has a plain white base coat with the dipping colors of red, black and the following flourescent colors: red, orange, yellow and green.
I still have to
clear coat
both of these, but probably won't be able to until the humidity drops later on this year. The bass actually has some clear shot on it, but it needs some more.

You dont see the pics?
They are awesome.
I'd be pissed if I bought something for some kid, then repainted it because the parents wanted it a different color, and then they went and bought another one for the kid sticking you with the one you not only bought, but put the extra work into painting. In fact if I ever meet your neighbors, remind me to slap them in the face.
Edit: Thanks for ruining my plan to mess with JP

I was pissed at first. Then I figured it was my own fault for buying it for them instead of them buying it and me doing the work. I offered to do it all for free and they stiff-armed me on it. Oh well. It's been a fun project though, so I can't complain too much.
But if you see them, don't bother slapping them. Punch them in the throat!

I like that idea better, maybe even a quick elbow to the taint.

I had to go back and re-read what she wrote because I didn't see that part! hehehehehe You're more awake than I am I see.
That stinks Courtney. Are you going to keep the bass then or sell it afterwards? Where did you learn now to do the painting? I'm so impressed by your skills. You're my hero. You're like the Lita Ford of guitar painting.

Good lord, I haven't heard the name Lita Ford since high school. That brings up memories of her and Ozzy doing the "love song duo".
Remember that.
Thanks! Appreciate that. I've always loved the swirls and always wanted one since I saw
Steve Vai
's guitar on the cover of Passion and Warfare. I'm going to do some swirls for myself eventually, but I wanted to do something different. Granted, these are in the same sort of realm as swirls, but they don't look anything like a swirl. It's done the same, just with less paint and you're not moving the guitar back and forth to get that zig zag look. Just dip it in, remove the paint of the surface and pull back out.
I'm going to keep the Primordial Ooze guitar, but I'm going to sell the bass. Want it? I've got two basses already, thinking of getting an Ibanez 20th Anny 5-
string bass
this fall. I don't need another bass.
I guess I picked up some things over the years as far as painting and finishing goes. Swirling is actually quite simple. It's like the simplist form of painting. You just get a tub, fill it with water and borax, pour some paint in and stick a guitar in it. I've done it without the borax and it comes out the same way though. Not sure how ATD does theirs, but this method will do the trick no problem.
