Hey peoples,
I am the extremely proud owner of a 1987 Roadstar Pro540R. I've had "Shadow" for about 2 months now, have done 7 or 8 gigs with her, and love her to death. EXCEPT....
Her neck was doing the wonky thing. You know, absolutely straight one minute, break out the
truss rod adjuster the next. She even changed in the middle of a song once! Perfectly clean tones, then started buzzing like a Fender the next.
Shims meant nothing. Adjusting the floyd, then re-adjusting the pickup hieghts and the intonation, did nothing. I even considered a new neck. But then, the little gerbil started turning his wheel, and I got creative. (Which scares people when that happens.)
A neck warps out because of two main reasons: tension and humidity. The tension was fine. Standard tunning and set the backstop tremsetter thingy for a bending the tone up about a whole step, which is my standard, didn't fix it, so it must be the humidity. Dry wood. OK, how to fix, without stripping the neck? Hmmm.... Ahah!!
I put a few drops of lemon oil down the trussrod cavity. 3 times in the past two weeks, and she's as straight as possible, and stable! Stable I tell ya! Haven't had to show her the tools since.
If you're have the same problems, try it. Worked for me and my friends RG570 that had the same issues. Let me know how it worked for you.
Thanks for letting me babble.
