A problem with '89 FP intonation.

So, I've been fighting with the intonation of my 77FP for a long time. Just can't get it right. I've adjusted everything I've dared but still. The problem is with the higher strings. Notes sound good below the 14th fret but out of tune above it.

I've set the intonation for the 12th fret. But the intonation on 19th fret is bad. The fretted note is lower than the harmonic. The guitar stays well in tune and while strumming chords etc it sounds good. But when soloing over the chords it sounds terrible. It really is a pain in a55 when recording. And I HATE correcting the intonation with floyd roses..

What to do? I've adjusted the saddles, the truss rod and changed the springs.

Here's a photo:

Suggestions are welcome!

Im a little worried about those trem posts.....
they dont look right at all....

the trem seems pretty worn, are the knife edges etc OK ? - when you use the trem does it always return to tune ?

You can tell just by looking that the High E & B strings and not positioned correctly

The B should be about 1mm closer to the pickups that the G
and the High E should then be about 1mm closer to the Pickups than the B

Yepp. The guitar stays in tune when using the trem.

Once I tried normal-looking trem posts from another Edge I have, but for some reason they didn't fit in my Jem :-o

Knife edges are OK as far as I know anything about them!

Hey!

I tried that with my age old strings (sorry :-p). Moved the b-string saddle the way you suggested and the high e saddle a bit further away from the pickups. Works much better now! Guess I gotta get new set of strings and do it better again!

Thanks!

You should go to ibanezrules.com and check out richs post about setup, front to back, and while your at it, those are definitely not your original tremolo post, i would have those replaced. They may be the wrong size as well. Im curious what fret are you using to intonate the guitar by?

As I said, I tried the original truss rods, but they didn't fit for some reason. I use both 12th and 19th frets for intonation.

It seems to work very well now. Gotta spend some more time with the adjustements next time I change the strings.

I've read that ibanezrules' setup-guide.

Re: A problem with '89 FP intonation.

BTW: you shouldn't try to do intonation with dead strings - they won't read true. You'll tend to find that fresh strings put onto an instrument intonated using old dead strings will be going sharp on you...

Re: A problem with '89 FP intonation.

Changed the strings today. Actually I tore the whole guitar down to pieces etc. Now the intonation's 99,9% perfect and the FP sounds better than ever.

Nah... Why bother? It's better when you can do it by yourself. I mean, all kinds of repairing. It's cheaper and you learn how the guitar works.
