Another Floyd Rose Tuning/Return to Pitch problem

Morning all,

I was just wondering if someone can confirm my suspicions. My Floyd rose is all in tune etc fine, and if I use it to flatten notes etc its fine and returns to pitch. If I pull sharp with it, it'll end up about 15-20% sharp (according to AP Guitar Tuner). I was thinking its probably that the knifeedges are worn? I did buy the guitar secondhand and it looks pretty well used. I was going to sharpen the edges a bit but they're not flat ones, they're both like hooked and I dont really feel like trying to sharpen them. Anyway long story short, does anyone know if its gonna be a "buy a new floyd" job or what?

Thanks guys

Rob

Hmm, unless you actually have the patience and experience, go get a pro to fix it or buy a new floyd

Put it this way: If you f#*k it up, who cares. You were just about to sink money into a new trem, anyway, right?

well thats what I was thinking tbh. But how on earth do you sharpen a curved surface like that I cant fathom it out! Maybe I'm being stupid or something. I'm hoping that someone will have a genius fix that'll mean I wont have to actually sharpen *prays*

Re: Another Floyd Rose Tuning/Return to Pitch problem

The double curve could be the problem. If the studs aren't mounted perfectly centered to the radius it will always be edge binding. That's why the good Ibz trems have only one curved knife, the other is flat.

You can sharpen it with a round file. I have one that is used for sharpening the teeth on a chainsaw.

Check the nut, tune the guitar, lock the nuts down and press the strings one by one behind the nut. If the strings go out of tune then youve found the problem.

Just tried that, the strings aren't slipping through the nut at all.
Also if I do end up looking for a new one, the best ones have one curved edge and one flat correct? Anyone know of anywhere in the UK that sells them?! I'd be nice to get a proper manufactured by Floyd Rose one, but I cant find a source for them anywhere

I wouldn't really reccomend getting an OFR, they don't have the 1 flat / 1 curved knife design. The arm design is also kinda lame IMO. I would reccomend getting an Edge or Lo-Pro from ibanezrules.com, the guy who runs that site is really good at setting up guitars and trems.

Re: Another Floyd Rose Tuning/Return to Pitch problem

Good point. Only problem is that the edge trems do not directly retrofit on an OFR guitar. Have to redo the studs and cavity. If the trem has TRS anywhere on it to include the cheaper IBZ and Jacksons then get a new bridge. Even a sharpening will not help a TRS. Gotoh and OFR are the only ones i would consider.
