Any Tips for Painting My Own Guitar?

HOW TO Paint & Wire Your Very Own HOT ROD seems like a pretty good book. Anybody have any experience with it?

I've never tried doing this before, kind of freaked out. I'd be painting my RG565 also, so I'm a bit paranoid about eating it. Any tips? Any books or tutorials? Any horror stories? Success stories?

I really just want it to be shiny and glossy, just like out of the factory.

If you want it to be shiny just like out of the factory you will need to pay a professional!!! on the other hand if you're willing to experiment (and to deal with the consequences if things should go ill) then do it yourself. If you expect greatness out of your first ever project, your expectations might be too high! but I wish you the best all the same!

Re: Any Tips for Painting My Own Guitar?

If you know anyone with a spray gun and compressor, you can do it yourself. I just did a respray on my sons christmas present (mini Strat. Hes five) and was stunned at how well it came out for my first attempt with a can gun. I tinted half quart of nitrocellulous lacquer from StewMac for the color coats and used the other half for the clear. As long as you have a clean, dust/debris free place to spray (don't do it inside unless you're in a pro spray booth), and don't go to heavy per coat.

Dont ever try to spray your way out of trouble , i.e. trying to fill holes and depresions with heavy paint spray . Stop and sort it then start again .

There are some clears that take alot of work out of it for you. Try Alas Speed Clear.

Given my inexperience and the fact that the guitar is very rare, and that I love it, I think I will stop being the cheap ass that I am and pay the damn shop their pound of flesh.
