Is there a reason why you can't measure the nut that's on your 421? And what kind of nut are we talking about here... bone, GraphTech, roller, locking?

I can suggest a material for whatever sound your looking for, but yeah
I second the motion to measure what you have already.

When I used to hand carve new nuts, I would just size it up and start
cutting.

Most nuts don't have the string slots already cut in them, and the ones
that do I wouldn't trust unless you had it hand made for your guitar by
someone who specializes in nuts for your guitar.

It's not just something you can glue in an be happy with. Even the finest
made nut needs to be adjusted to fit your individual instrument.
