Binding on finished guitars?

Is it possible to put a binding around the body of an Ibanez RG AFTER it's been finished, meaning completely assembled and store bought? Is there a way to mod an RG to have a binding?

Re: Binding on finished guitars?

on the RG3120 and RG2020 what they do is leave a strip of bare wood with no finish where binding would go so it looks like binding. i think it looks better than binding actually. that might be easier. but of course it's done before its finished so there is clearcoat over it.
but to put binding you would need to route a groove in the body al the way around for th binding and it would involve a lot of work. but it is possible i suppose. and you would have to disassemble it too.

Re: Binding on finished guitars?

Another option-wet-sand the body with 1000 grit, have an auto pinstriper stripe the edge so it looks like binding, then clearcoat the entire body. I am attempting to bind an RG body myself and the routing is a HUGE PITA. I will need to fill and refin the whole thing and wish I had done my first option or as the other link showed. Routing on a flat-topped body like a tele, would be okay but the arn relief is what screws you.

I like it too, but you don't see it from the front.

that's called a natural binding.
