Borax Substitute for Swrils

I've been searching the site and the net all day without an answer. I was wondering if there is another substance I can use instead of Borax? I've never heard of the stuff before and looking on the net, it's hard to find. What is Borax commonly used for?

accually borax is sold at like walmart and albertsons and stuff, its like laudry soap stuff

Harder to get in the UK though I think (although Boots did sell it for a while).
