Bump and Grind - How damaged are you

I was just wondering how many of us have had the unpleasent experience of damaging there Jem/Uv.

This is what happened to my Jem7VWH

About three months ago i was jamming in some pub when the screw on the straplock (not the horn side) came out. Unfortuanly at this moment of guitar playng i was pulling off a two handed tapping technique (not difficult but looks impressive, both hands over the fretboard) when the guitar dropped to the floor with me unable to catch it, now i am 6" 2 so it had a long way to go. It landed on the back and then bounced several times. I couldn't bear to look.

With audience thinking that it was meant to be i bowed and went off. When i went ot pick up my guitar i could allready see flecks of white paint on the stage. It has a nice 3 inch *scratch down to the wood round the edge on the back (near jack plug) Nice chip in lower horn *and a dent on the back of the headstock, i am glad the neck didn't snap, and several other dings (it was mint before i played that night.) I have had it checked out and it still plays like a dream and now has some attitude.

Bump and Grind

My 7V is beat the hell.

Just today I repaired the cracks that ran along the back of the nut to the fingerboard (total of 4). I was very impressed for my first time repairing anything that major, it came out perfect!

It had been cracked and had been causing serious tuning problems for a few months now...just never thought I could do it myself and couldn't dish out the $250 to get it fixed. (BTW-Brian thanks for the mail! Sorry I forgot to reply but I wanted to try first, if this doesn't work...thanks!!).

The body is chipped in several places, the back was scratched like crazy 5 years ago when I got it and was wearing a belt...
The neck has also been sanded, also on the neck is one ding (rivet from a Fender logo plate on a Deluxe amp), a few line impressions, one chip on the side of the ebony, not to mention the headstock has several cymbal crash scratches.

I love my JEM! The neck feels soooooo awesome. I rubbed some Tung oil into it today and it's just perfect..... this is the first time I can say it's set up and playing 100% top notch.

One other thing: the trem is now an older Edge I got from Jimm V. The gold has worn a bit on the palm side....thankfully that has ceased due to wear I rest my hand. Maybe I can get it re-sprayed somewhere.

Andy - how did you go about fixing the crack under the nut? I remember the original thread on that - how'd it come out?

Bump and Grind

Youch, you guys are hurting me.. I BABY my guitars so much, it's not funny. My favourite guitar is a 5 year old strat which has seen dozens of gigs, and way more play than any other guitar of mine.. And the only scratch on it that I know of is a tiny ding on the heatsink you have to search for to find.

Bump and Grind

It was quite easy. I really took a scaled down approach. I got a couple clamps ready, (just regular hand clamps...no 36" ones...), got some industrial strength woodworker's glue, pull the headstock enough to rub some of the glue in with a brush...I push glue into it with a razor and a business card..made sure it went in as far as possible, (not far at all!), then I put a rag over the neck, stuck the clamps on and left it for a while.....checked it a few hours later, gave it a tug, not a budge. Cleared off the glue (actually re-sanded the neck with 100 grit paper and rubbed in some Tung Oil)....I love that damn guitar!
