Buzz Feiten Mod

How much does it cost to do 1 guitar?
I really don't think I've got the nerve to start moving my locking nut myself. I don't feel confident that I could do a good job. In School I was terrible at woodwork!!

At Cahndler Guitars I think it was £200 but I'm not sure. I know they do the mod though.

I thought you werent allowed to do the mod because of the Patent???? I thought you had to pay royalties to Buzz Feiten????

Actually I'm pretty sure it's 300 to get done. you don't pay a royalty to Buzz. To be officially licensed to do it you just have to attend his class which costs a few grand and he teaches you how to do it. I have a luthier out here who does it on his guitars and it's great. the best was to show it has such a great effect is pick up any old guitar. If you play an A in one point on the neck and then go further up you will notice on a good tuner it's not precise. The higher up you go the more out of tune it gets. With the Buzz system the guitar is in perfitch pitch all over. it's great for people who do a lot of open chording to get the perfect pitch.

Buzzy himself will tell you it's NOT perfect pitched. It's just closer...

It's 1200.00 to take the class, and you get a certification to do it in a repair shop. Two of our guys are getting set to go and do it.

NOTE: I AM NOT A LAWYER!

A patent gives an inventor a legal monopoly in regard to a given invention. This monopoly gives them legal ground for taking action against someone who makes and distributes the invention in exchange for goods or services. Most countries also have a clause in patent law that set an upper limit on the number of copies of the invention that can be distributed without being considered patent infringement.

As for the Feiten mod, this means the following:

1) It is perfectly legal to perform the mod on your own guitar.
2) You can perform the mod on other peoples guitars so long as you don't charge for it, and you don't do it on more guitars then the upper limit mentioned above.

A rather detailed description of the mod can be found by searching the United States Patent and Trademark Office's web site. Almost all currently enforceable patents are required to be made available for public view. This would give you enough information to do it yourself if you have the skill.

A sticky point that comes up is what the legal standing is in the event that you perform the mod legally, but sell the guitar at a later date. I think that technically, this could be considered infringement. For practical purposes though, I think that someone who performs the mod, and at some later point sells a couple of guitars on E-Bay would be pretty safe. On the other hand, someone who makes a pretty steady business buying used guitars, fixing them up, and them selling them could get into trouble if they made a habit of performing the mod on them before putting them up for sale.

As i mentioned in an earlier post, I used to work for Washburn. To say that they have problems with the Feiten system is kind of true. In the Custom shop, they could get it right every time. The problem came when they satrted having the Feiten system on import guitars. Because of the extremely tight tolerances on this system, the builder must be very careful- and Korean guitar factories often are not. I don't even know if these guitars could be considered Feitenized, but they all had the sticker on them. The thing is that almost no one can tell the difference so no one complains! My opinion on the system is that I can live without it but if you have it done take it to someone good!

As far as the tuner, I have the Korg DT7- the Feiten tuner- and have heard it isn't as effective with the system as it claims. I have not tried it with the Feiten stuff, but love it as a regular tuner- it works great there!

Hope this helps. Hope I don't get sued for saying it
