Can't get my action any lower on my Jackson

Hey dude, ive got a Jackson DK2S, and i cant get the action low enough. I tried shimming the neck, it worked a little bit, but buzzes if i shim it too much.

What do you think is wrong? Its a brand new guitar.

Thanks.

what did you shim the neck with? have you lowered the action on the bridge too? You also might want to check the relief on the neck as well, though I highly doubt it since it's a new guitar.

Probably just needs a good setup. Either keep trying or bring it to a tech and have it set up.

Shimmed it with some sandpaper folded in two, and two half business cards

If i lower the action on my bridge it buzzes.

Don't assume that because it is a new guitar that the frets have ever been properly levelled - you may need a levelling and crowning to get the action super low.

Play with higher action! Trust me, you'll be glad you did. I used to be a low action guy myself, but after getting my hands acclamated to a higher action, it's not a big difference, and the tone and dynamics are far better.

Check out Magnus Olsson, he uses really high action and can play the hell out of a guitar.

Other than that, I'd also recommend a good setup regardless.

Re: Can't get my action any lower on my Jackson

i agree with the play with a higher action, very little "tone" from low actions........

either frets are not level or neck (truss) is badly adjusted or your trying for an impossibly low action.......

theres a great guitar tech over in Leigh called Max - banner at top of page - who specialises in locking trem guitars

Normally just Ibanez but i'm sure he'd fettle an inferior brand too!!

Theres a few North of England jemsiters who've been over and left very happy

PM Rich, he'll confirm that not all new guitars out of the box are ready to go, fret-wise.

Re: Can't get my action any lower on my Jackson

Thanks guys, yeah i wanted a low action because im more of a legato player, and its hard to legato on a high action guitar. But hey, itll make me a better player if i can play well on both high and low actions.

I really can't be bothered posting my guitar to Max just for a setup. I just don't want to pay all that money, just because my technique isnt good enough. Im sure ill go to him if i want something big doing though.

And dude, Jackson isnt inferior. Both brands are very good guitars. The only reason I was "anti-Ibanez" in the 2008 leakage thread is because too many people are hyping up a not so hyped-up leakage.

AND:

Why Rich? Why not the other 4000-odd active members? No offense to Rich, but i just want to know why everyone kisses his ass all the time. And this isnt directed at you personally Darin, but in general. Im just curious.

I don't like the sucking-up either, but it's because he's sold literally hundreds, or even thousands, of high-level Ibanezes, and knows probably everything that there is to know about them.

Still though, it doesn't take an expert to discover that guitars out of the box aren't always set up correctly...

Re: Can't get my action any lower on my Jackson

Yeah, theres a load of people on here with high-knowledge of guitars, and that have also sold hundreds of Ibanez's, Max Cottam for example. I hate sucking up.

Back on topic, ive stuck to high-action, ive realised that it might help me in the long run, and my fingers dont hurt anymore

Guess ive gotten used to it! Thanks guys!
