Chrome Illusion finish - On a shoe string budjet....

Has anyone tried using the new finish from Krylon called Mystique™ Color2Color?

It only changes from one color to another but it looks like a good candidate for a custom finish.....

Sounds pretty cool... If you click on the "View item information for this product" link, it says that they do shift through 3 colors...

1440 Blue/Purple *
* Shifts from cyan through purple to warm red
*
1441 Silver/Green *
* Shifts from silver through the full range of greens into purplish blue

1442 Magenta/Gold *
* Shifts from magenta through red, orange and gold into yellow

If you're set on refinishing your guitar, there's no harm in trying it. I'd try it on something else first though, like some unfinished wood.

great tip brian! due to work i haven't been able to start my spray refinishing on the cheap cort (following your instructions). i only hope the local home depot here in chile carries it! also i see it comes with a black base. maybe different base colors will give you a lot of options? thanks again man!

caprile one of the beautys about (Home take your wallet out and empty it here at this Depot) is that if they carry a brand but not the actual item you want they will order it in for you if you prepay. Be sure to take the product numbers off the website before you go.

good tip! let's hope the local one does that. that silver to green looks promising... are 2 sets of black/color/clear enough for a guitar?

Should be but I would get extra clearcoat to go over it even more. Krylon is famous for most of their products working together very well, so just pick some up off the shelf for that.

Cool !

When I asked DuPont Australia, how much a can of Chromalusion cost, it was $600 for 500mls or $300 USA. That quickly settled my indecision about whether to stain or solid colour my Ibanez. Now that this Krylon product is out, I'll have to re-kindle my thoughts of a solid colour.

Metal fleck paint has been around for donkey's years, and they appear to change colour at times, but Chromalusion is amazing to actually watch it's almost spooky !

FWIW, there's a similar product by Dupli-color (auto paint company) that you can pick up at Checker Auto (other names in different part of the country). 3 part kit (base, shift color and clear) is < $20. I think there's some other threads here as well, might be worth a search. check here and here

Use the same principles we discussed here and just use the kit. Of course you will probably want to get extra clear to do the top justice....

Spoke to Krylon in the U.K. yesterday about this paint and they said they can't see themselves stocking it, which is a real pain in the butt as I intended an illusion finish to be my next, but didn't want to pay dupont prices.

After many a fruitless search the only illusion style paint I can get hold of in the U.K. is the dupont, although I'm awaiting on a call from a friend in the motor trade who may have another cheaper option.

Steve

P.S. The U.K. sucks for many things like this.
