Confusing string gauges - Maybe thicker strings aint the way
Alright I'll set this up. I have an RG7 and an AX7. Usually I use heavy strings. Recently I've been using the EB Power slinkys 11's-58's. For my tuning those are really heavy. Since FROM the standard BEADGBE I tune my low string up a half step to C, and the next 4 strings up a STEP and a half (to G,C,F,A) the strings are very very tight. Whenever I fool around and go down to standard B, even with the power slinkys the strings feel very floppy and they dont sound very good...This is on my RG7. (Which has a 25.5 scale neck). Now reason why im confused is I just strung up my AX7 with some extra strings I had lying around. They are pretty light strings...I think my low C is a .52 and then my G is like a .38! Which is a lot thinner then I usually use. And it goes on from their going very light. Now the AX7 has a 24.75 scale...So their should be less tension. BUT. what is really confusing is that the strings on the AX7 are NOT floppy, they sound great, and most of all, they are VERY VERY easy to play. I dont know why this is happening...but it's got me considering maybe trying some lighter strings. Maybe some 10's-56's. But does anyone know why the AX7 is playing so awesome with such light strings?? I think the scale has something to do with it...or maybe my RG just doesnt like light strings.
