cracking/popping Marshall amp

hey folks.

this buddy of mine has a Marshall VS100R that he bought in 1997. after about a minute or so, after it has warmed up, it makes a cracking and popping noise (very loud) with or without the guitar/cable plugged in.

he's looking to fix it up himself, if possible. any ideas?

thanks in advance!

Hey there,

My JCM2000 100w head did exactly the same thing. I think the tubes are dying dude. I got new power tubes and had it rebiased which fixed the problem for me.

The vs100r is a valvestate amp. WHich means its solid state. NO tubes to go bad. Ive seen some solid state amps overheat and do a similar thing, since it works fine for the first minute or so, that would be a possiblity

I thought the VS stood for valve state - hence one pre amp valve?
