Custom Gauge Strings for droppedC PRS

Hi!

I've seen couple of times in various threads that you guys are good at calculating string tension. I know nothing about it so I'm here for your help.

I have PRS Cu24 (25'' scale) and I'm playing in dropped C (CGCFAD). I need chunky strings- I strike it hard. I thought of 11-70 GHS Zakk Wylde Boomers, but as Zakk now has endorsement deal with Dunlop these strings are not in production anymore and dunlop only offers 10-60 now ;/

So I thought of getting my custom gauge set. So what will be the best set for: a) 25'' PRS and b) 24 3/4'' Gibson Les Paul Supreme. I think in PRS a starting point can be 11 while on Gibson 12. Please give me an advice and suggest strings that have pretty close tension.

yOu might want to consider the new Ernie Ball "Not Even Slinky" strings, they give less sag and aren't flubby when drop tuned.

I second bamm on that, they are getting pretty popular, be warned your gonna need a heavy setup adjustment though for a gauge that high, unless your neck is super stable.

Re: Custom Gauge Strings for droppedC PRS

I know about Ernie Ball Series, but it sucks. They only offer 11s with 54 on the low E. It's a **** as I'm using 52 in standard tuning. And if considering 12s- which is pretty heavy on violin strings for me, a change on the lowest string is only 2cents. From 54 to 56. Ridiculous. So the only strings still available on market for my purpose can be 11-70 GHS, but for how long.

For the 25" scale PRS, a custom set like this should work well:

D: .011" PLAIN = 14.97 pounds
A: .015" PLAIN = 15.62 pounds
F: .019" PLAIN = 15.79 pounds
C: .028" NICKEL WOUND = 16.25 pounds
G: .038" NICKEL WOUND = 16.46 pounds
C: .058" NICKEL WOUND = 17.17 pounds

Total Tension = 96.27 pounds

For a 24.75" scale with the same strings, total tension would drop to 94.35 pounds, two pounds less overall. I'd go with the same custom set though, it'd work well. If these are too light for you, maybe you need to lighten up your touch.

I use 10's on my Custom 22 for standard tuning, and they are great. If I was drop tuning to C, I'd use a standard set of 12's, and I think you'll be fine.

Re: Custom Gauge Strings for droppedC PRS

D: .012" PLAIN = 17.82 pounds
A: .016" PLAIN = 17.77 pounds
F: .020" PLAIN = 17.5 pounds
C: .032" NICKEL WOUND = 21.44 pounds
G: .042" NICKEL WOUND = 20.07 pounds
C: .054" NICKEL WOUND = 14.64 pounds

Total Tension = 109.24 pounds

With less tension on the low E than even the high E, this is gonna feel and sound like sh*t in my opinion. The low E is laughably sloppy.
